  • Newbie to West Bay

What's the best option in West Bay for someone in a 22ft Sea Hunt....? Seems like everything near Sea Isle is REAL shallow..... Only trip toward SLP ended up running aground..... Views from Google Earth don't look very encouraging..... Maybe best to put in a SLP ramp...? If I'm in less than 2ft of water with this thing, I'll be stirring mud.

I'm no expert, but you could probably do sea isle if you took the channel out and ran out away from the island. It's really not too shallow, but I'm not exactly sure on where you plan on fishing.

Fatboys isn't too bad, as well as that ramp on the south end of the bridge. Be depends on where you are planning to go from there.

If you take the channels out of Sea Isle or Terramar you can get into 4-5' water. Yes, SLP can get super shallow.

I've seen boats your size put in across the bridge at SLP at the old KOA camp (San Luis Pass County Park). Nice ramp, newly dredged. You can cut over to the left (away from the SLP bridge) and there is some good water there. Not sure on depth.

It's tough navigation in west bay, trial and error can be expensive option. Everybody will tell you to get guide you will learn the bay and catch some fish. I have been out there for about 6 months (SLP a year) trying to learn the reefs etc... Use GPS, google map, hook'n line and you can get around. SLP you can only stay in main marked gut ( large whit PVC with orange strips) to stay from grounding in your boat. The best is to go out during low tide to see all the reefs in upper West Bay and Chocolate. I've been very lucky but take it slow and conservative when coming out of the channels etc...

My goal this year to hire Aqwa Pimp (Greg Francis) a couple times and with his guidance and my field experience put it all together

              go to Welcome Board!

Yep, what they said... and take your time... go deep and then ease in... don't let it get out of control as to where you are when you're on place.

I'd stay away from San Luis pass area-the marked channel (PVC with orange tape) has filled in-I cannot get thru in my 23' Robalo so far this year and am in 1.3-1.6' of water where it makes its first bend coming from West bay towards the pass/Bird island.

I would suggest you work the reefs and shorelines of west bay and keep east of San Luis altogether. No reason not to fish east of the Causeway and East bay itself.

Per Coachlaw, the newly dredged ramp at the old KOA site (Now Brazoria Co. Park) is mucked up and apparently the contractor did not dredge it correctly and Coachlaw was aground in his boat-you'd be laying on the bottom and stuck in that 22' Sea Hunt so don't even try that until the area is correctly fixed.

main areas to watch for are Shell island, Carancua Reef and Confederate Reef in West bay (and the entire San Luis Pass Area). A good map, well studied would be a smart move. Good luck and good fishing.

By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary.
