The Coast Guard rescued two kayakers on Tuesday who were stranded south of Galveston, the agency reported.
The kayakers, using their cell phones, contacted watchstanders at Sector Houston-Galveston about 11:20 a.m. after tying their kayaks to an oil rig 7 miles south of Galveston. the agency reported on its website.
A rescue crew was sent about 11:45 a.m. and arrived at 12:05 p.m.
The crew transferred the kayakers aboard the rescue boat. The kayakers were taken to the Galveston station and released to their mother.
"These young men were lucky enough to have a cell phone with them," said Elvie Damaso, a watchstander. "The Coast Guard would like remind mariners to always have the proper equipment with them before going out in open water. That gear could help save your life."
