A friend of over 30 years died Friday after developing pancreatic cancer as a result of diabetes. I like what another of our buddies, James Surls said; "He had the gall of a mule". He dang sure wasn't shy!
After his two years teaching at the American Academy in Rome, he and his wife Connie moved to a tiny village in Spain on the Portuguese border. We visited them several times. I remember Bert telling me a story about planting his garden there. The whole town came to watch and laugh.
He did pretty well for a kid from the 5th ward. RIP Bert & say hi to Connie. She's probably chasing him around Heaven right now with a frying pan!
