  • My Wife's Birthday Project

Well I've been working on this for weeks and I'm almost finished. She has wanted to get started in to archery for a while and I got her a compound bow but she doesn't like it. She wants some thing simpler, and really was looking at one of the turkish horse bows but I really didn't want to spend that kind of money on a bow she might not like. I don't know of any archery shops that carry them so she could see one and try it. So what have done is build, made or what ever you want to call it a flat self-bow simular to those used by the native americans from horseback. It has some improvement (I hope) over the bows they had and I really hope she will like it. I'm also building her some arrows for the bow and once I get two more finished I'll be done. Here are some pictures of the bow, some of the arrows and the quiver I ordered that happened to come in today.

Now the question is, since I finished a lot faster than I had planned and there is a month until her birthday, should I give it to her early or try to keep it hidden for a month.........

I broke down and gave it to her this evening.........

Other than not being too happy about getting her birthday gift early, she got over it pretty quickly once she realized I had made the bow. She is very pleased, and was a little upset it was too late to go out and shoot it this evening. Maybe she can give it a try tomorrow evening.....

Derek, that is some great work. Do you build these for a living or just for fun?

This is the first one, I bought one of those first-timer's kits that have most all the lines drawn out. Not a easy as paint by numbers, but it wasn't too hard either. Now I have to start with a tree I cut down on my property and build one from scratch....

Did you consider a leather loin cloth, tassels, eagle feather and a painted pony to compliment?
Seriously though, it looks real cool. Are you a bow hunter? Whats the advertised draw wieght?

Not that much different than a Karankawa indian hunting the shallows at night with a torch and a spear.

She already has the ponies......horses really. I can only hope for the loin cloth.......

Yes I'm a bow hunter from way back, and still hunt with a longbow most of the time. I haven't put the bow on a scale, but it was built to be in the 25-30lb class with a 25 inch draw which is her draw length. It can handle up to about a 27 inch draw and would be in about 35-37lbs at that length.
