Flounder Conservation
September 1, 2009 the new flounder regulations go into effect.
Limit 5 per day, for recreational anglers.
There will be a November closer for all giggers, and a limit of 2 fish, per rod and reel angler.
We were lucky not to have the run shut down for everyone.
TPWD put these new regulations into effect to curb the decline in populations of the southern flounder specie.
BUT what else is being done?
Well TPWD is in the process of trying to perfect a breeding program for flounder, but they are cashed strapped, and funds are limited. Their Lake Jackson Sea Center is now 10 years old, and was not designed for flounder.
Along with financial & facility issues, the brood-stock of fish in captivity needs a constant supply of live fish for new gene stock.
That is where the public, YOU, steps in.
So far for 2009, Lutes Marine on Chocolate Bayou, has raised more than $500 dollars via the participants from there fun, family oriented fishing tournaments. Along with money, there has been nearly 25 live flounder from the Galveston bay system, brought to the Sea Center, for breeding.
We have a goal of a $1,000 dollars via the remaining 3 tournaments, and another 50 live flounder.
On another note, we just got word that Direct Energy has donated $500 dollars for the Sea Center program as well.
So, fishermen of all backgrounds have been having fun fishing, and showing support for flounder by entering the tournaments on old Chocolate bayou.
If you are interested in hearing more about events on Chocolate Bayou, or the occasional fishing report, you should request to be on the email list.

The next tournament will be on August 22nd. Hope to see you there.
