Anyone remember this show from 1982? It was freakin' awesome. I only caught a few episodes when I was a kid, then the show got cancelled due to network politics. The creator, Donald Bellisario went on to do Magnum P.I., Quantum Leap, and several others. But this one . . . this one was the BEST!
So I was tooling around on Amazon doing Christmas shopping for my niece and nephew. Suddenly I remembered this old show, so I typed it in and BLAMO there it was! I threw it in the shopping cart, checked out and couldn't wait for delivery.
That was a few weeks ago. I just finished the series, and y'all know what? It was BETTER than I remembered it. Sure the special effects are lacking, but the characters and stories are great.
To jog y'all's memories: The series is set in 1938 in the South Pacific. The main character is Jake Cutter. He's an ex-Flying Tiger. Sure the Tigers didn't exist that early, but so what. Forget real history. Suspend your disbelief. It's worth it. Anyway, Jakes sidekicks are Corky, his semi-recovering alcoholic mechanic, and his faithful one eyed dog Jack. Add a moderately attractive spy lady, a French bar owner with a guillotine scar on his neck, and a German spy playing a Dutch missionary who is always giving the native girls his "Blessings", and you've got one heck of a set of characters.
Probably my favorite part of the series though, is one of the most fantastic planes ever built. I was a real plane nerd when I was that age, before girls became a primary interest. The Grumman Goose, which is an amazing amphibious aircraft, plays a role that is reminiscent of Han Solo's Millenium Falcon in Star Wars. The plane always has something wrong with it, but it never fails to steal the show. One of the things on my bucket list is a ride in a Grumman Goose.
I can't tell y'all how much I enjoyed watching all 22 episodes. I highly recommend it, even if you never saw it before. I think you'll find yourself like I did, saying well, I'll watch ONE more episode. I was just so sad when I got to the end. Go to Amazon and get it. You won't be sorry. - Sandy
