  • New to fishing West Bay!

Guys...I just bought a house on Tiki Island, and I'm totally new to fishing. I don't have a boat yet, so for the time being, I'll be fishing off my pier(which is directly on the bay...not on a canal).

Any tips for a total novice on how to catch some fish from his pier? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Charlie

Get me a set of keys made and we can show you around!! HAHA.. Welcome to the site and it sounds like you have a great place. Bounce some smelly gulp swimming mullet off the bottom around the pier and against the grass line. Might snag a flounder or a red.

    Good luck to ya

get a underwater light. Throw live shrimp on a bare hook with no weight or use gulps (shad or shrimp). If ya aint got an underwater light, turn on overhead lights-cast beyong the lighted area and let your live bait/shrimp swim and work for you waiting on the tell-tale tap or line tightening and if gulp, drag slowly and also try different speeds reeling. Good luck.

          Welcomea aboard, Charlie!
All good suggestions so far. I'd buy a cast net or minnow trap for bait. If you're on the bay you ought to do fine.

Thanks for the tips guys! We took Robalo's suggestion tonight, and the wife and I caught a pretty nice sized redfish, 8 specks and three sand trout on the live shrimp with no weight.
Not bad for a rank beginner!

Not bad from a pier (or a boat for that matter). I'd invest in some lights for the pier and a minnow trap!
