  • More from a Galaxy Far, Far Away?

Well, this has nothing to do with fishing, but it's big news in the entertainment world. I have a feeling many of you here who are around my age feel the same about Star Wars. It arrived at a time in my life that it was able to leave a profound impression. It colored my perceptions of friendship, sacrifice, and loyalty. It helped me define the difference between good and evil. They weren't just movies, they were magical, fantastic, wonderful, amazing, inspirational MOTION PICTURES. The special effects, while groundbreaking, were in the background and the story revolved around the characters. In the late 70's and early 80's, you weren't a geek if you loved Star Wars, because EVERYONE loved Star Wars.

When the new movies came out, they were SUCH a disappointment. The first one truly sucked. What a stinker! The second one sucked only slightly less. The third one slightly better again, but still there was vacuum associated. Gone was the magic and the great characters. Now it was all about computer generated special effects, which all looked terribly fake. I can't even watch these when they come on TV. George Lucas took the perfection that was the original series and edited them constantly so that they lost much of what made them great in the first place. The magic was gone, and all I could do was hold tightly to my original VHS unedited releases where Han shot first and we didn't need political correction in fantasy movies.

So, now we embark upon this new adventure. Will Disney be able to take us back to that galaxy far, far away, and restore the magic? Or will they create another series of bombs that turn Star Wars further into a bastion for geeks only. I haven't had anything to look forward to in the movie business in a long time. I am looking forward to 2015 now, but I'm wary of being bamboozled again.

I will never forget the one and only time I experienced an entire movie audience stand up and CHEER like their team just won the Superbowl. It was 1977 and I had just turned 4 years old. Luke had just blown up the Death Star, and aside from Jimmy Carter, all was right with the world. I want to see that again. I want to cheer again.

May the Force be with Disney as they plunge forward. I offer them the most sublime words of wisdom from any movie, "Do, or do not, there is no try."

    Here's a link.

The Force is strong with this one: In a major surprise, a seventh "Star Wars" film entitled "Episode 7" is slated to be released in 2015 -- and will launch a new trilogy with which George Lucas pledge...

I heard about it but I don't have much hope for it to be any good. Only time will tell.

So, Mary Poppins is a Jedi (her light saber disguised as an umbrella)?

I do empathize with you Sandy. The first Star Wars appeared at an impressionable time in my life, as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. Those two movies had inspired me. The later sequels never did measure up, and rekindle the enthusiam I had then.

But, shortly after the first of Raiders, I moved to the earth equivalent of Mos Eisley ("wretched hive of scum and villainy", no not Washington DC) and my frame of reference changed forever.

I don't think I've even sat through the last two or three editions of the Star Wars movies, since then.

Nah, I'm just the only one who will admit how much I love it.

Rocky, Jaws, star wars.....all classics with umpteen sequels that sucked...although Rocky III wasn't bad.
