Well folks its that time again to head south to the deer lease. I cant wait to off turn off I-35. Sure hope to see Mr George at the ranch store.I wonder if that old ragged dog will still be there. He seems to defy time each year.I look forward to opening that first gate, grabbing a cold one out of the cooler, hearing that crack of the tab, that cold fermented hops on the back of my throat and cranking up some old country music. I love driving down that red dirt road. It will be 8 miles of pure bliss and relaxation. Im sure there will be more than one stop to check the cooler. I know when that gate closes its like entering a different world. All thoughts of work and the daily grind will be left outside that gate. Ive spent the last 8 years finding myself on our 6000 acre pasture. Not sure what I found out but its been pretty entertaining.
Yes we call it a work weekend trying to convince ourselves we have something to get done but ater 8 years we never have much to fix any more other than a few timers and batteries. We will top off some feeders and turn the protein off. We have some good steaks and tasty liquor waiting or us at the camp. We will be roughing it as usual. Hope the satellite is still working.
Good news it is the opening day of dove season and we hope to find some birds and maybe have a fresh meal at camp. I cant think of a better time of year than this weekend. Oh wait opening day of deer season. Yes its that time once again. I dont get as wound up about the trophy hunt like I use to but I think I enjoy it more in a diferent way now. Not sure it make sense to some but I just love being at camp and watching huge bucks do their thing. Dont get me wrong if they make a mistake they might pay for it depends whats going on in my head that day.
I also plan on hitting a few of my honey holes and hope to find some nice points to add to my collection. I enjoy hunting arrow heads almost as much as deer hunting. It is a really cool feeling to pick one of those bad boys up and realize you are the first person to touch it in several hundred years if not more. I usually take time to think what it would have been like to have lived that life and experienced the native landscape as it once was.
Anyway thats all I got for now enjoy you weekend cause Im gonna enjoy mine for sure.
"get busy living or get busy dying!!"
