  • Poor Man's Tarpon?

Was out on Sunday afternoon with the wife, started off by catching a half a dozen dinky specs. Then around 4pm, casting from shallow water into the channel, got into some big ladyfish, 20+ inches. Gotta tell you, it was quite spectacular.

Those fish would bust out of the water, thrashing and flailing, what an aerial show! We hooked into about a dozen over a 30 minute period, but only managed to land three. Some of them, after putting on the aerial display, and once we got them turned toward to the boat, would just charge straight at us, go zipping past, and then start making the drag scream, then back to the acrobatics, and more often than not, would sling the hook out. Also had a couple break the 12 lb mono.

I had never caught big ladyfish before, had caught small ones, maybe 12 inchers, and didn't even know they got big. I hope we can get into them big'uns again sometime. Was terrific fun!

And that is a ladyfish, right?

Thanks GC13. I like "skipjack" better. Oh... gotta tell you, I've been drooling over your new boat. I keep telling myself that I'm doing just fine with my little boat, but I am finding myself stopping by BassPro and looking at the rigs, and looking on the 'net. Arrrrgh!

JbV, gotta say there was more "WOW!" and "DID YOU SEE THAT!" and "WOAH" and "LOOK AT 'IM JUMP!" in thirty minutes of fishing than I've ever heard before.

I hear you! I keep thinking wading and yakking does me fine, but I'm always shopping the boat listings! LOL!

Paul, if it gets to that point, I'll definitely be asking advice. Also, I am somewhat shocked by the price of even a modest boat!

Oh... was there a trampoline at the picnic?

Gotta be honest though, the skipjacks seemed to know way more what they were doing than oBama does!

Last time I was out, we caught 2 or 3 to every "real" fish and had fun with them-most of the ones we got were 2 pounders and were stripping drag-fun fish for C&R.
"Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. BEAUTIFY AMERICA, RUN OVER A LIBERAL, THEN BACK UP AND SEE IF HE'S DEAD.

Robalo, my wife really had fun catching them, and I did too. We were doing C&R no matter what we caught. I had even mashed the hook barbs down with a pair of needlenose pliers just to make for easy release. That probably attributed to some of the lost fish, but that was okay.

It was really interesting how those fish would head straight for the boat and go zipping past to the other side. One of them got the line in the trolling motor and broke off, another just simply broke the line. Still was good stuff.
