  • FWE Stickers bring good luck!

Thursday night, got the boat and gear all loaded for an early Friday morning run. Just as I was going to bed, remembered that I needed to put my FWE stickers on.

Friday morning started off with a little frustration. Had 5 hook-ups and could not land a single one. I'm not talking about just bumps, I'm talking about having the fish on and playing them for multiple seconds, then GONE, just like that. For example, was drifting the edge of a shallow reef, got a really good hit, fish ran parallel to the reef for 40 feet or so, turned away from me, started peeling line, and then just like that, nothing on my line but the GulP.

Examined the situation, decided that I've got to set the hook harder. I'm using a 7 foot medium light rod, 12 lb mono, and 1/8 ounce jig with GulP jerkshad. Most of the fish got on at near max casting distance, so with the limber rod and the stretch of the mono, I gotta just bang it to em.

Moved to a different secret spot in the afternoon, and changed my GulP tactics, started fishing it kind like bass fishing with a worm. Well, the change in tactics worked. Had a great afternoon - Brazoria County Slam baby!!!!! FWE sticker done brought me some luck!

Two specks, a red, a flounder, and about 20 crabs. Plus a half dozen dink trout, an 18" red, and some ladyfish. The ladyfish were fun, and gave me a chance to practice my hooksets. And that 18" red, man, he put up a fight, a couple line peelers and dives, a really tough battle, was surprised that it wasn't bigger.

The flounder was a big'un - almost 21". The red was right at 21, and the two specks were 17 and 18.

Here's the flounder. The ice chest has a 20" scale on it, with an inch on each end, so the cooler measures 22". The flounder was WAY bigger in person than in the photo!

Anyway, my morning frustration changed into a great day... and this is my first slam ever.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Since it is just me and the wife at home, the fish will make six meals for us. My next few trips may be catch and release. One embarassing moment... I never filleted a flounder before, had to jump on Youtube to see how!

I never filleted a flounder either! We always just clean and gut them and cook 'em whole.

This was right at dark? You've seen me a few times, one of these days you gotta stop so I can meet you. Even if I am fishing, stop by - don't worry about messing up my fishing, cuz I never catch anything anyway. Plus, it will be a great opportunity for me to get a potlicker photo!!!!
