So I'm out here in Bayou Cook, La. today with my old buddy Ziggy. He and I used to be bouncers together at Fat Harry's. I see what I think is a big red tailing and I pole to within casting distance for him. He makes the most Godawful cast you've ever seen. Clearly he is not going to hook this fish. He's 20 feet away. Then BAM, it's on. He pulls in the most beautiful golden drum I've ever seen. It looks like a red without the spot, but it had the dendrils on it's chin, so it was a drum. It was big, but not ugly at all. Zig was a little upset that it wasn't a red, but he was still charged up about the size. It measured at 27 inches and I prevailed upon Zig to throw him back. After the deed, he said, "Damn that was awesome. I'm gonna have me a smoke." So he laid down his rod and lit a cigarette.
A few minutes later as I TRY to catch a fish, I hear screaming drag and I look over and Ziggy's pole is trying to jump out of the boat through the folded trolling motor bracket. Apparently the bait was just barely in the water next to the boat and this red just came up and nailed it right next to the boat! He didn't know what was happening, so I told him and he finally grabbed his pole and unthreaded it from everything on the bow. The red had hooked himself pretty good and amazingly the line held up. 22 inch red in the box. All that from a cigarette. Meanwhile I got skunked. I need to take up smoking. I've never seen the luck this guy has. He is quite honestly one of the worst fishermen I know, and he would not disagree but the dude is LUCKY!
I couldn't wait to post this story because it was quite the spectacle. We got launched today at 2pm and on the way to the camp we hit a school of trout and got 8 in the box up to 18 inches. We left them biting to get everything settled at the camp, but when we went back, they were gone and the gafftops had shown up.
So we went into the marsh for reds, and that's how we ended up with a redfish on a smoke break.
More tomorrow if Gawd say da same.
