"The fundamental article of my political creed is that despotism, or unlimited sovereignty, or absolute power, is the same in a majority of a popular assembly, an aristocratical council, an oligarchical junto, and a single emperor. Equally arbitrary, cruel, bloody, and in every respect diabolical."

Hear! Hear!
John Adams was a great and wise man.
My wife's family are decendents of John Adams from DeLuthe Minnisota. When we reviewed her family tree, we found many(10+) decendents also named John Adams...kinda like George Forman's family with several Georges. Just thought that was interesting.
To your point(or John's), tiranny can take many forms, but all are equally devistating to it's Subjects."I love this country, it's the government I'm afraid of!"

I'm more of a Jeffersonian (anti-Federalist), but I do believe John Adams is slightly under rated when you look at his entire body of work. The one real black mark on his presidency was his signing of the Alien and Sedition Acts, which were absolutely Unconstitutional and extremely despotic. I read recently that he wrestled mightily with the issue, but signed them rather than possibly suffer an over-ride of his veto. So it marks a very rare instance where he sold out. He was usually more dogged in his mannerisms, which gave him a reputation as not easy to deal with. I think that's one time when he should have stuck to his guns. The passing of the Acts can be directly correlated to the fall of the Federalist party from existence. All in all a very wise man, but flawed just as we all are. From 1970-1997, true heaven on Earth existed on the banks of Bayou Cook. "Hey Dad, Thanks for buying the Camp."
