  • Fly Fishing Anegada

We had planned to do some shark fishing last night. We use ladyship for shark bait, and I catch them with a fly rod at a place here that we call "the creek". It is the only place where the interior salt ponds connect to the sea, and it is normally loaded with ladyfish.

Yesterday afternoon - not a single one. Nada. But I did spot some barracuda in the creek. Cuda is the only thing that I have never caught on fly here. Shark, bones, permit, grouper, snapper, jack, you name it - but never a cuda. I tied up some flies for cuda a couple of years ago, but have never really had a chance to use them because spotting a barracuda is normally a chance thing.

So, I put my 6wt away and put one of my cuda flies on my 8wt. I can check barracuda off my list.

Then, I decided to check out the West End. Bingo - bait right at the edge of the water and tarpon busting it. I finished the day with a sunset tarpon on fly.

When the tarpon are feeding on a bait ball like this, I use an olive over white clouser with a little bit of pearl flash. In the water, it fairly closely matches these fry. I don't fish inside the bait ball - a waste of time. Instead, I fish from 10 feet from the outside edge to the outside edge so that a poon has a chance to see my fly. I have hooked up inside a bait ball before, but it is pure luck. I have much more success fishing the edges.

When the tarpon are not in a bait ball - cruising in the open - I will go to a chartreuse tarpon toad.

All of my tarpon flies are on 6/0 Tiemco 600SP hooks.

Here is a quick video of a blacktip shark breakoff. He hit my cuda fly and cut the wire tippet. The shark is briefly visible after the breakoff scurrying in the shallow water on the left side.
