Might see next time if it is a cow-calf pair, speaking of dolphins. The babies were born a few months ago and should look like half or 3/4 sized adults. Mama teaches them how to feed like on the their favorite mullet, trout, smacks, and reds. If you see a baby try to be cool, since they don't know about boats and fishin' lines as yet. Very lucky fishing though, since them babies don't eat too much. I've seen cow-calf pair play "catch" with cannonball jellyfish and sheepshead before. Kinda cute, honest.

Adult dolphin, especially males over a year old, are extremely aggressive feeders and will "coral" schools of fish so they can pick 'em off fast. This ain't no good for fishing unless you are well ahead of their direction - in many cases, the dolphin can close the fishing down dead as a doornail.

Long story - it's kinda like us humans, where the girls have their own packs and the boys run around raisin' hail. There's a reason why the females are so defensive - if they lose their baby, the dudes think it's time for her to be knocked up again. A female mama will fight to the death to protect her baby. Like a chimpanzee, these animals are so smart and are so powerful they can knock a 300 pound linebacker senseless.

If there is a good thing about dolphin, they tend to run off the sharks. The females of course to protect the babies but the boy-men like to mess with shark just for the fun of it (just like we do, kinda like muddin').

Can I tell my offshore dolphin story though? We hit a shrimp boat off SPI and it was infested with male dolphin ... but there was blackfin tuna under them. So we pulled in a few blackfin "footballs" and my buddy catches a real big bonito, a false tuna not worth but cut bait but a good fight. So he's crankin' in this bonito and Mr. Flipper (a dude of course) grabs aholt of his catch and drags out about 100 yards of line off the reel. Did that 3 times! Poor fella was about to pass out pulling on that for over a half-hour. Finally got the bonita to the cockpit and there were no tooth marks or nothing - just a really chewed up tail.

      Kinda like that picture there.

Thanks for all the info, guys. Both times I saw them, there were pairs, didn't really notice if one was smaller than the other. Didn't seem that they were chasing fish, they were just bobbing up and down headed straight down the channel.
