  • Shift Cable ID and Replacement Help

I just bought a little foam filled 14ft Mckee Craft center console with a Johnson 70hp on it yesterday. It's a clean little boat and starts right up. The previous owner told me the shift cable needs to be replaced though. I didn't see a serial number on the cable but I did not take the housing apart. Is there a way of knowing just by seeing the shifter and motor?

Also, how hard is this to repair? The shop down the road wants $4.25 per ft for cable plus labor ($150-$200).

    Here are a few pics.

The cables run down the center of the boat in a little u-shaped area that sits under a cover.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about taking the cover off but I wasn't sure if there was anything I need to know about before doing so. I don't want to unscrew the wrong screw and mess everything up.

The easy part is replacing the cable, the hard part is getting all adjusted right.
