  • Gar fishing

After the rain and flooding last week, I got a half dozen or so Gar's in my acre pond. I've tried trot lines, fishin em and chootin em... All I catch is my catfish. Any suggestions??? I don't bow fish so that's out. I got 2 with my 12 gauge but that's about it.

I got my flashlight and 12 gauge and just went back out there. I got 2 water moccasins and 1 big gar. We'll see what floats up tomorrow. I'm not gonna lie, the water moccasins scared the chit outta me. I guess they like the light.

Get a big piece of multi-colored rope about 18" like a ship hawser. Fray it up and rig it to a rod and reel of a heavy piece of twine and tie it off to a tree or stake in the ground and toss it in the pond and a check it every few hours.

Gar are curious and when tangle their jaws in the hawser when checking it out.

My Dad taught me an old trick where you lasso those gar. Piece of wire to make lasso, attach to heavy rod and reel( depending on size of gar). Drop line through lasso and attach hook and perch below popping cork, cast out and drink beverage. When gar takes bait hold on.
