  • Advice for south padre island

I will be in south Texas this weekend and MAY be able to sneak away for a while and go fishing. I will be about 45 min to South Padre island. So I was wondering if anyone here has any idea of where I could go to wade fish. I will take my wife with me to take pictures because this will be a CPR trip only. I have no way of keeping any fish I catch.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

LLM is all pretty fantastic. Depends on which way you are driving in from. Anywhere between Laguna Vista and Port Izzy has places to stop off and wade fish if you're down that way...you can walk a mile from there...

I have never been there so "I know nothing", I will be staying in Weslaco. I am hoping to get a whole day to fish, but will be happy for just a few minutes.

So you are saying drive till the map turns blue and start pounding the bay? I can do that

I got you...go into Harlingen and then to highway 100...head south and once you get between Laguna Vista and Laguna Heights the water is right there and where you need to be...you'll see it on google earth.

If you want to go to the island, go across at Port Izzy and then go RIGHT into the state park...the jetties are there and you can catch everything from trout, snapper, kings, and tarpon...both sides of the jetty. Easy parking, food, ice, all that. Plus a beach right at the foot of the jetty if the bride wants to swim, sunbathe, whatever...nice spot. caught a lot of fish there

I was looking at the jetties on google map and was wondering if that was a decent spot. The pics google had had about 6 trucks there. Looks like you put me right on them. I just checked the weather and it looks like I should go on Sunday.

I was a little south of Corpus a couple of years ago, my son-in-law took me down there and a friend of his took us out in Baffin Bay. We caught so many fish I had to stop fishing because my arms hurt so bad. I litterly caught a fish on every other cast, most were too small but we had a blast.

Thanks for the information I will post pictures when I get back.

good info. i used to live down there. there is also a little pier on the island side under the bridge that can be good, its free.
the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

We are in a nice Motel, the problem is I don't know when or if there will be time to go. I will have to sit and wait until the opportunity presents itself. I may have to wait until I am on the way home on Monday.

Well I made it back. We went to scout it on Saturday was beautiful, I found a couple of spots I wanted to try. The wind was calm the water green. We had to go back before I could wet a line so we came back on Sunday. Well I forgot the chairs so we went on a paty boat. First time I have been on one in a long while. We went to the jetties and caught a lot of sand trout and of all things ells, a couple of catfish and gafttops, we caught some other fish that are called zebra fish maybe they were brown with stripes and feed on the bottom. We were there about 30 min and the tide shifted and the fish were biting like it was going out of style, then the water turned sandy and the fish flat quit. That is when the king fish hit and all you know what broke loose. This is the first time in my life I have seen 3 people running un and down the boat chasing a fish. If it haven't have been so intense it would have been funny, but they finally gafted him and he weighted about 20#. My wife was at the bow and watched the whole thing, I don't think she could have got more excited if she had caught it. It turned out to be a great afternoon.

I want to say thanks for the help and advice. It really made my wife's mothers day. It was a not so good weekend for her and this made the difference.

We did not see any Tarpon, we were only there for 3 hours. Here is a pic of the king I took with the cell phone. From what I was told the kings left pretty quick after that one was caught. The water got too sandy. We also saw a turtle several times. My stringer was about the same size as the one in the pic. Not much size but a couple of meals

I'm going down there for Memorial Day weekend and taking my boat along. It's going to be a long haul but I hope it's worth it. Any other spots you all know about that are accessible with a boat? Any tips are appreciated.

                              Thanks in advance!
