I know of one person who's been hit in the surf but I don't think they're quite as prevalent out there as they are in the bay. I'm probably wrong though.. I have to admit I'm a bit more lax about the guards when I fish the surf.
    Shut up and FISH!!

i have the ray guard boots. the reef boots and guards are much cheaper. i'll probably buy my third pair by the end of the year. better safe than sorry. glad you're all right. i read stories on the internet that you can be laid up over six months. that's why i went and bought some. i guess that's why they call it CHOCOLATE BY-YOU. Lord Bless.

I bought a pair of ray guards this weekend...I caught 3 or 4 rays in the surf the last couple years so not sure if they get thick in the surf but I know they are there. I have stepped on something out there that gave a lil shimmy under my feet...I didn't have ray guards then so I might have been lucky...not worth the risk. Heck last year a slimer hit my thumb and for 2 months I felt the soreness so no telling what a sting ray can do to me.

Glad you didn't get stuck ibtsoom! I still take my chances with the shuffle although some guards might be in order for the bays. As far as the surf goes, I've been flopping around in it for better than 50 years barefoot and never been hit.

As I mentioned, we had a problem in the Fla surf, the Clearwater, St. Pete area has a few here and there,
but I never worried about it doing the shuffle. Also, the water is Gin clear, you can see down 5-6 feet no
problem. I think i'll get the guards anywho, better safe, than outta commision for months....Not a good thought.

Error there: "We Never had a problem", in the Fla surf. I was always barefoot, never wore shoes or sandals.
Will not do that here tho, not from what ya'll have said.

I don't walk the bays because of pockets of mud and quicksand down here by SPI, so I fish from the boat. In the surf I go barefoot and shuffle my feet. We don't have as much hard good ground for walkin' except up by the Cullen House.

The only time the surf is bad down for stingrays here is when the wind and waves go flat. I never had a problem because on those days, usually in August, the bait ain't moving and the fishing isn't as good.

Don't let anyone ever tell you you're not hard headed Rocky. LOL. Don't come on here whining about it when you get hit. It will happen.

On bashing them against the boat, I put a hole in my dad's boat doing that

I don't recommend this guy's technique. He doesn't pull the line taught enough for my tastes. Oh, and his hat is freakin' ugly too.
