  • A celebration of life: VJER Vic

I wanted to start a new thread here, just for us to celebrate the life of our friend, Victor Martinez. I'd like to ask all of you to use this thread to post any pictures you have of Vic and also relate your stories about him. Seeing he pics 2112 posted gave me the idea. I'd like to be able to share everyone's remembrances with Vic's family. No matter the length of the story, please know that it will be treasured. I'll begin with how I met Vic some 7 years ago.

I got home from school after a particularly hard day trying to keep some kids on the straight and narrow. I got on 2cool, which I had just recently discovered and I clicked on a story about fishing the Cold Pass area. When I got finished with the story, I reflected upon it and said to myself, "I think I would get along with this guy. I think he feels exactly the way I do about fishing." As I scrolled back up the page, I was excited to see that he lived in Angleton too. Yet another reason for all of you to post your location for others to see. You never know who you might become friends with, they could live right down the street. Here is a link to the post on 2cool : http://2coolfishing.com/ttmbforum/sh...ad.php?t=50082

Being new to the internet, I wasn't sure how weird it would be to contact someone and say, "Hey, I read your story and I really think we should go fishing together." I finally decided to send him a PM. He didn't think it was weird at all to want to go fishin' with someone you had never met before. Not long after, we planned a trip to the SLP area, but bad weather blew in. He suggested that since I was completely new to the area, that we take a ride around and he could show me all the places to launch a boat. He took me to every ramp from Lutes down to the Brazos and all the way down to SLP. We had great conversations the whole way. Not long after, we started fishing together on a pretty regular basis.

I couldn't have known it that first time I contacted him, that he would become my best friend, and even more than that, a father to me. With my own family so far away, it was wonderful that he and his wife Lynne took me in and treated me as if I was their own son. There is so much more to tell, and there are so many stories swimmig in my head. I'd sure like to hear some from y'all though, and I know Lynne and the family will treasure them as I will. Don't worry if you've posted the pics or the stories before. We'd love to see and hear them again. - Sandy

Sandy I was new to the whole internet forum thing as well when I sent you that first message about wiring up the camp for you during your re-build -- Due to that single message I've had the pleasure of meeting some really great people and making some life long new friends. I feel really lucky to call Vic one of them. Vic was the kind of guy that you loved from the moment you met him. He was full of life and laughs and transferred that feeling to everyone around him. And I guarantee if you spent any time at all with him you didn't leave hungry! He made some amazing oyster stew and fish tacos!! He and my wife hit it off from the get go as well -- they spent their time on the porch talking about fishing, life and swapping recipes! Vic got a big kick out of us guys sitting around and swapping songs on the guitars - The first night I came out to play I did a song called Oreo Cookie Blues -- it's a fun song that normally gets a chuckle but it really tickled Vic and he requested it every time he got out to hear us play. Every time I play that song from now on I'll think of Vic sitting on the porch laughing along. Godspeed my friend -- until we meet again.

Ive only met the man a few times, he and Sandy came by the house and saw him at the FWE club meeting last year, as I talked with him and Sandy, I could see very clearly he was a stand up guy. It was easy to see the friendship he and Sandy shared, a friendship like that can never be replaced.

                Keep 'em coming y'all.

Thank you all so much for your calls, PM's, and posts. All of them, no matter how short will be great to relay to his family. Ibtsoom, that's just the kind of story and pics I was hoping for. If everyone can post something like that it would be wonderful. 2112 is making a video tribute and I reckon any pics anyone has will be good additions too. Here are a few more. - Sandy

The last pic is Vic and Lynne, his wife.

Great pics Sandy, I'm right clickin and saving those. I think I have some of the Vicster, but they're on my other computer, at that other place. I'm so glad I bought that redfish engraving from Vic last Summer. If I can find my camera, I'll take a picture of it and post...Vic was a true craftsman. He took great pride in everything he did, and it was a pleasure hanging with him and assisting with the camp rebuild. I wish he'd been able to come out the last time me and you were there.

                  RIP Vic!

I've already got a ruff draft of a good video but these pictures are really going to help so if anyone's got favorites of Vjer then post them here so I can lift and add to this video...The song is a classic but a version that most of you all have never heard before, a studio demo from Lynyrd Skynyrd...it's gonna sincere effort by me.
                    Thanks friends.
                    P.S.
All of that knew, miss you Vic.

I am a far better person and feel very bless to have been able to know Vic! When I was able to get down to the camp it seemed Vic would show up most of the time and we would sit on the porch of an evening telling stories. Last time I was there so was Vic so I will always have that memory.

Vic, May you always have a moving tide. May the wind be always at your back. May the warm sun shine on your face. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hands.
