Got a newbie question regarding cast nets. I was out a couple weeks ago on the jetty in Apfel park. I was a bunch of bait fish and was wondering what the rules are for catching bait with a net. I got one from Wal-mart a little 4 footer. Hoping to use it for bait???

All rules are in the TP&W pamplet that comes with your license. My advice would be to follow it and not some of our advice...you could end up with a fine. That being said...finger mullet, shrimp, and mud minnows are all legal if taken in the right legal areas. Casting from piers isn't legal although you'll see people doing it and there are some areas that are considered hatchery's that are a big no no.
Read the book first so there is no confusion...because the game warden want care where your from if you caught breaking the law.
Welcome to Texas by the way... if you've never wade fished, get ready, your gonna love our resource here once you get it figured out!

If it smells like fish....you know I've been there!

David, welcome to Texas and to extend a little hospitality to a new trans-planted Texan who happens to be a disabled vet, let me offer you a Flounder gigging trip.
PM me if you want my phone number to know more. I see you can handle a cast net so I am going to assume you can hold a gig for a few hours.
You will need to have a fishing license to take fish from my boat.

Not that much different than a Karankawa indian hunting the shallows at night with a torch and a spear.

Welcome David! Go to Academy and pick up a Hook-N-Line map of the Galveston area and a Texas Lakes & Bays Fishing Atlas. Study the hotspots (for the desired type of fish), recommended tackle, vehicle access/wading spots, etc. and just start fishing them one at a time until you find a honey hole that suits your fancy! Study the maps, learn the water and have a great time on the water. There are so many great places to fish in the Galveston area! Good luck fishing!

We understand you were not raised here but it seems ya got to Texas as quick as you could, so welcome! Like so many other said, find a hot spot maps and study it well. Your 14' jon boat will do fine as I learned in my flat bottom. SLP and back up into West Bay is a great starting place. Lauch at the Brazoria County Park at SLP (Freeport side of the pass). There was a great post here on available launchs on the west end of Galveston. Good luck. Post some reports from your trips.Just mind over matter, if you don't mind it don't matter. If it matters you better mind!

Dang, We're inundated with hippies here
At least you got out of the People's Republik of Kalifornia. Welcome to Texas.

Republik of Kaliforniiia is exactly the description I was thinking. It has gotten to where 1st you cant afford to go do anything outside and the laws are so many and intricate that you dont even want to go out anymore
