I have fished the channel going into the lake alot dragging the bottom with lures or live shrimp and have caught trouts, flounder and reds alot when I was younger. It gets really shallow in certain parts of the lake so be careful. Also alot of stingrays! We used to gig in the lake with a flat bottom jon bottom alot and we saw and got chased by TONS of rays. We would kill 2-3 everytime we went. Once you get into the lake you can find reds tailing on the sandbars and shallow flats. If you have anymore questions PM me and I will send you my cell # and I can be more specific about how to get back there and some reefs right outside the place that are good!
Never gave it a second thought, but after seeing CS's post it might be a great place try Fly fishing for reds from a yak. Where are there some good places to put a yak in around there so you don't have to paddle a mile?

Thanks for the reply Carolina Skiffin ! Sight casting with the Fly is my first choice when I leave the dock.Sweetwater just looked like a good spot to give it a try,at least it did on the aerial maps.
If I was to go by a Yak I would launch off of Offats Bayou going by the community golf course and getting in the water by the jetty that goes towards the channel leading into Offats from the bay. I think it would be a pretty easy trip by a yak only a mile or so if that. Also in between the launch and the channel going into Sweetwater there is another cut the goes straight back into a pasture that we have caught fish in before

Have you checked out the Pirates Fly Club board here? Not a lot of activity as yet, but hopefully that will change. Glad to have you, I'm still a bit of a hack with a fly rod still but want to learn.
Thanks CS for all the info!
