Home Defense Ammo, .22 Question, and RV

I have a Ruger P95 9mm. Do any of you have a suggestion for home defense ammo? I shoot Winchester and/or Federal at the range, because their 100 round boxes are so cheap. However, i'd like to have something special in the "house mag".

Also, I want to buy a .22 to carry fishing with me for the varmints that might want to get a little too close for comfort. Recommendations?

One more thing- if any of you have a hook up with a travel trailer sales person, i'll be interested in buying one of those at the end of the year.

Winchester Ranger ammunition is pretty good I'm sure there are others though.

Sometimes it's tough to find locally if so check at the gun shows you can find it there.

On the .22 question I enjoy my Ruger Single Six, single action cowboy style pistol with .22 LR and .22 magnum cylinders.

For home defense, I think the best and really only proper weapon is a shotgun. Take some time to think about it you'll see that there are myriad reasons why. Is it good to have a pistol hidden somewhere too? Absolutely, but remember that pistol rounds go through walls, including exterior walls. Whatever personal defense ammo you decide on, remember that you have to make sure an auto pistol cycles them well. The Federal Golden Sabre ammo is what my mom loads in her .38. If anyone has done research on this sort of ammo, momma has.

As far as a .22, there are a lot of ways you could go. If you want auto, you can get a very compact 22lr Beretta 21A for about $350 new. I'd go used and you can get them for around $250 or even less if you really shop. Here's tonights gunbroker page for them. I'd actually prefer a revolver because of the reliability. Sure they're bigger, but you can't beat a wheel gun for going bang when you want it to. The Ruger single six is a fantastic piece, especially when you couple it with a .22 Mag cylinder. If you want to go low cost, I can recommend the Heritage Rough Rider. The fit and finish is nothing as quality as the Ruger, but it's a nice piece and comes with a .22 Mag cylinder too. I love mine. They have them at Academy.

As far as a 22 to fish with, get a saturday nite special-I have a 2" barrel, 5 shot cylinder and carry it on the boat for sharks (only if necessary) or if Corndog and Reeltime are anywhere near me! (was that a reduntant sentence


I would not carry a $350 22 near saltwater-it'll be a $50 gun after one season.

For home defense I echo the shotgun theory. What a shame it would be to shoot at an intruder, miss, and kill a neighbor or Heaven forbid, a family member. I keep a 410 close by. I figure it will stop an intruder and reduce the risk of collateral damage.

look into the silver tips. when i went through a security course, that is what was recomended. 100% inpact, 10 to 20% extract. they told us, if you get a black T-shirt and throw a hand full of white flour on it, that is what the inside of the body looks like. they also make a deringer overand under 38, 45/410, 22 mag pistol. they are small enough to carry in the back pocket without it being noticed. i used to carry the 22 mag when i had it. i did shoot a couple of rattle snakes with rat/snake shot. it does a number on them. they are only good for short distance. the majority of people killed are within 7 feet. a long shot is 15 feet and over. that was the statistics back in the 80's. i traded the defender shotgun (pistol grip) for a pistol. very accurate, but hard to conceal. i think it was an 8 shot. there is a place off of hwy 59 that sells refurbished fema rv's for cheap we bought a 28 ft goosneck for 4 grand from there and sold it for 10 grand , and went and bought another one

the .410 bore Mossberg "500" home security model should do just fine, and sawed off versions are legal to 18 inches of barrel or 26 inches overall. The military uses something like them for close-in fighting in buildings and such, maybe a bit more powerful. The pistol grip is nice.

Got a sawed of shotgun. I'm not sure what it is. My dad and uncles call them rabbit shotguns. It shoots bird shot well.
