So you switch lures & can't buy a bite while I'm whacking the fish on my confidence lure, now what do you do?
You could switch to your confidence lure or ask me how I'm working it. Confidence in a lure & you will work it different than one you don't. Presentation is also a key to the puzzle as with lure selection. Change the presentation up along with the right lure til you find what works.
    Today is a new day!!

Heck Ninja you use saltwater baits in saltwater to catch freshwater fish. (Based on yer recent posts).

Trout killers are my go to!Jhuas beloved hackberrys will outfish my go to bait occasionaly but im convinced its because of his confidence in em.A good beginner bait is gulp I like things that i can walk on the bottom like ghost shrimp in new penny for flatties and something a little faster like ripple mullet for reds. Definatly try diffrent things though you will eventually find a bait that you gain confidence in. And confidence is everything.

          backlash49,

First off, your questions have not been stupid. They are welcomed. Now on to your question. Get yourself a nice selection of lures together and experiment. If I were to buy a friend some lures, I would pick up a pack of glow/chartruese, amber/chartruese and moring glory plastics. For jig heads, I would go with 1/8 and 1/4 ounces. Maybe a Skitterwalk for the times you can hear the specks "smacking" the surface. After that, you can pick up different types of lures and try different presentations.

The best thing you can do is get out on the water. You can't get that "go to" lure unless out there casting. Have fun! Post reports and pics!!!

Go with a soft plastic bait, since you are new to fishing lures I would suggest a paddle tail style soft plastic. They have built in action versus the typical rat tail style. Don't worry about color now, just pick one color and stay with it. The size of the jighead is more importnant, no matter what color your lure is, if it's not in the strike zone it doesn't do you much good. For shallow water (2-5') I would go with a 1/8oz jighead and for 5'+ go with a 1/4oz.
