  • 9.9 HP motor repair questions

    Hi,

I've got an old 1976 Evinrude 9.9 hp tiller motor on the duck boat I'm re-doing. Does anyone have a clue how to replace the gears that connect the tiller handle to the motor and control the throttle? Here is a picture showing the Tiller handle flipped up and away with the gear intact. Normally it connects with a similar looking gear when the handle is flipped down. As you can see from the picture, that part broke off right behind the gear. I have seen the part online. It is some sort of a gear with a shaft assembly. I spent a few minutes messing with it the other day but can't figure out how the heck to replace it.

Also, if anyone on here knows how to work on these old evinrudes, let me know. I'm going to rebuild the carb, swap out the impeller, and some other things. It would be nice if someone could tell me some tips.

The end of the Choke Pull knob broke off too. I was told the knobs are discontinued. Any recommendations? I think I still have the end that broke off. Super glue maybe?

What this little gem is going to push. (Work in Progress) Just repainted inside/outside, replaced transom. Motor, Trailer, seats, rod holders, etc. are next.

What part of Houston are you located ?

Just north of the 610 loop near Ella is Stone and Sons. They have new and used parts for Johnson Evinrude motors.

            Just another option.

This guy is the expert. There are other links on the Johnson outboard: http://www.sschapterpsa.com/rambling...g_fuelpump.htm

The tiller gear breaking is a common problem. They say never put the arm up too high or you run the risk of it breaking. I think they fixed it in the mid 80's. Sorry, I don't have a solution, but look at this link, there might be something on the tiller. In fact, I remember him talking about it. Also tells you how to rebuild carb. Don't take apart the fuel pump unless you absolutely know it needs to be rebuilt. They are a pain.

We don't work on the tiller handle and gears. They are a MF to replace. Good luck and try Torque's source, I don't think Stone and Son's will work on either.
