  • Bowfishing Questions...

We have any bow fisherman on the board? Thinking it would be fun and curious as to the cost involved for the equiptment...change it up a bit!

its cheap as long as you dont go overboard with it , i bought an old pearson from the pawnshop put a pendelum sight on it and got the thirty dollar reel and arrow setup and have used it for five years , whole thing cost about 90 bucks to rig up
I dont always drink beer, but when i do , I prefer to be fishing !!!!!

I have done it before in the past and still bum a ride every now and then now. I had my own boat at one time and did the tournament thing when I was younger. I just don't have the money and desire to do to much of it these days. It is quite expensive most of the time.

Yes you can do it that way but if you are going after the 100-200 lbs plus Gater Gar you need a bow that will shoot about 60-70 lbs. I have shot a recurve before and an old bear but it get costly when you have to buy the reels to hold up because they are always pulling drag and the bearings are always burning up.

Then if you have a boat whether its a airboat or a fan boat it takes a lot of gas money in order to run for 8 or 10 hours at a time. Its a lot of hard work when we used to shoot the tournaments when you shoot several hundred fish.

Great info guys...I would not be a "serious" bow fisherman...just drift flats looking for reds or whatever kind of like I do now...my boat gets real skinny and drifts great...

As far as size I would not be looking for those big gar you mentioned. I used to deer hunt with a bow but that was over twenty years ago...I imagine the technology has created better bows than the old PSE I shot...had it stung to 60#...figured fish would need a lot less.

ive never done tourneys for bow fishing , after the time change when its light outside til 830 or so we just drive around to the drainage canals in dickinson santa fe and hitchcock and walk the banks for gar to float up top
