  • Whaler Info

I have a family member that has an 1987 17 Whaler sitting in their yard in FL. I am thinking about going down and picking it up from them, but I wanted to find out if any one on here runs one. Has anyone put a jackplate on one? How shallow will they run/float? Is it tough to run a trolling motor from the stern (I am used to bow mounted)?

    All info is appreciated.-Brandon

Captain Glen Stevens has a classic 17' Whaler. It will go plenty shallow and a stern mount trolling motor worked fine as well. I fished many a mile of Venice marsh!! Maybe he'll chime in here.....

i learned how to fish in a 17 whaler montauk, absolute best boat for west bay. It can eat up the chop and it can run really skinny. Can't tell you about a trolling motor or jackplate because we never had either. But we took our 17 montauk 40 miles offshore to the VA fogg and just about every cove in west bay. If you trim-up your outboard you can use a push pole to get around the flats.

They run shallow enough to scare you.
I have an uncontrolable desire to wanna jerk my rod.

When you guys talk about running shallow just how shallow do you mean? 10 in?

I have fished all over Galveston in his boat. Runs skinny and is a great boat.

Well, shallow is a relative term. Shallow on the upper coast may be 10"- 15", but on the middle and especially the lower coast it probably is more like 6"-10".

It will definitely run in less than 10"

It is powered by a 30 hp mercury 2stroke. I believe it is about 165 pounds.

Go get the 17 Montauk-ya can't hurt them and helluva boat. You could likely find a cheap 60-90 HP to run it.

By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. 17' Montauk was my first boat and I loved it. Awesome fishing platform. Very light and easy to move around. Mine fit in my standard size 2 car garage. I could roll the boat/trailer around by hand. Easy to launch by yourself. Will run plenty shallow, and if you run it aground just get out and push it off. We fished 2 people very comfortably. I didnt have a jackplate. I did run a 12V trolling motor from the stern and it worked fine. It will eat up chop for a 17' boat. Mine ran 44-47 MPH with a 1977 100 hp Johnson and had a holeshot like you wouldnt believe.

I love that boat and you should drive to Florida and pick it up.
