Day got started MUCH later than planned due to the pea soup that rolled in! Wanted to run back to a spot that has been good all year but not generally so in winter...being it has been warm I took a shot. Left Sea Isle around 1:45 ish with Lara and the stupid fog rolled back in me...slowed to a putter, used GPS, and my compass and made it across to the canal. After an hour I made it to my spot...
Finally there I started throwing bass assassins. Nothing hits. Slowed down and bounced off the bottom and hooked up. Stayed with that pattern of real slow retrieve which cost me maybe a dozen jig heads as it was a shell bottom but fish would only hit right of the shell. Over the course of the next hour caught several small trout and some rat reds. Also caught a few on some chartreuse GULP that Chip (Imhammer) told me that he had good success with.
After an hour had a REAL nice hit, set it, and thought I had bottom...then the bottom moved! Fish then ran a bit pulling drag so I told Lara I had a good red...worked it closer to the boat, fish surfaced and smiled that yellow mouth at me...holy crap that's a big spec! Stepped down from my platform, worked her to the side of the boat, she stuck head back out of the water, shook, and spit it!!!! Obviously I cant guess to well to length but I think she was over 25" at least. That was one hell of a fish.
Wound catching several more throwbacks...maybe seven reds with one keeper. Kept five specs, threw back four more, and caught one 19" flounder to round out the slam.
No limits but I consider today to be a great one...especially as a Near Years eve...here's hoping everyone on here has a fantastic and blessed 2012!
