  • The Barometric Bite

How many of you pay attention to barometric pressure? I started paying close attention to it this year. I have a few weather stations saved in my favorites and watch the charts and fishing reports daily. There is definately a correlation between the flucuating pressure and the fish activity. I am going fishing no matter what state the barometric pressure is in, but when it is dropping after a peak, I get a little more pumped about the trip.

    High
    Clear skies
Fish slow down, find cover or go to deeper waters.
Slow down lures and use baits more attractive to fish. Fish in cover and in deeper waters.

    Rising
    Clearing or improving
Fish tend to become slightly more active
Fish with brighter lures and near cover. Also fish at intermediate and deeper depths.

    Normal and stable
    Fair
    Normal fishing
Experiment with your favorite baits and lures.

    Falling
    Degrading
    Most active fishing
Speed up lures. Surface and shallow running lures may work well.

    Slightly lower
    Usually cloudy
Many fish will head away from cover and seek shallower waters. Some fish will become more aggressive.
Use shallow running lures at a moderate speed.

    Low
    Rainy and stormy
Fish will tend to become less active the longer this period remains.
As the action subsides, try fishing at deeper depths.

The other way around buddy. Your the one that hooked 54" of trophy trout in the past couple of days.

FYI........the bold entry was cut and pasted from someone elses write up on barometric pressure as it relates to fishing.

I watched the pressure peak Friday around lunch time and then start to drop in the late afternoon. I left work early and was able to fish for only 30 minutes (5-5:30pm). It was on!!!

                  Saturday was the same story.

There are many exceptions to all the rules people come up with.

I think with fishing, there are always exceptions!

Just when you think you have them figured out they change the rules!!! I thought today I would have smoked them right before the front. Had 3 blowups in the pouring down rain then the front hit and didn't get another bite. Some times you win and sometimes you lose!!! That's what keeps us coming back for more.

You are spending too much time looking at the barometric pressure. That is time that can be spent out fishing. LMAO you can catch fish at any time I like the barometer to be around 30. The fish are always pigs and for some reason the aerobatics are a sight too see. They say that the fish are slow & sluggish BUT once that hook sets for some reason they always come alive? Spend less time looking at the barometric pressure and more time in the water; like DPop said there are exceptions to the rules. You just have to learn them...
