hell on reels and i spent last week fishing and exploring costa rica. what a beautiful place. i've been alot of places and really think new zealand and alaska were the only places that were as beautiful. our first fishing trip was a blast although the fishing wasn't all that great. we went offshore on a 33 foot boat looking for billfish. we did jump a nice sail, but it threw the bait with the jump. we also saw several other sails jumping freely, 3 or 4 jumps at a time. we spotted a few humpback whales, along with numerous dolphins and leatherback turtles. we returned to the dock with one nice yellowtail snapper for dinner, which the hotel cooked for us to perfection. we went four wheeling thru the jungle and hiked to some waterfalls in the rainforest the following day. the second fishing trip was great. we trolled the rocks off the shore of manuel antonio national park searching for a big roosterfish. we used 6 to 8 inch live permit for bait. i landed a large jack that hit a line in the outrigger. it went about 20 to 25 lbs. i hooked up with the next fish and handed the rod over to julie and the fun started. she fought the fish for maybe 20 minutes then the rooster surfaced. it made several runs then we finally boated it, weighing 60 to 65 lbs. fishing was slow, so the guide took us on a tour of the park by boat, cruising the lush quepos coastline. julie did the zip line canopy tour the following day and i fished with a couple of guys i met at the bar who had used the same offshore guide. we boated 3 huge dorado during the first hour of fishing and that was it for the day. mine weighed somewhere around 50 lbs and the color was very vibrant. awsome fish.
quepos was really nice. the hotel la mariposa had the most spectacular view i've ever had in any hotel. we had a corner room so had views of 2 different directions. the birds and monkeys on the hotel grounds were alot of fun. we also saw sloths, iguanas, a toucan, a porcupine, and several species of monkeys. it's a cool place, put it on your bucket list.
