With the technology today there is no reason Garmin or any of them can't provide a programmable unit that the user can program to their requirements at a reasonable price and be able to add apps they would want. Yeah Garmin is falling behind the game, think they are to concentrated on the car/personal market. Unless they step up their game my next unit will be a Lowrance or Huminbird.

If your looking at buying any electronics check out the extended warranties as Square Trade rather than the dealer one.

I purchased a Garmin 546S a few months back and have been very happy with it. And believe it or not, West Marine had the best price I could find locally. I have to check my reciept when I get home, but it was under $800, I think closer to $750.

I'd like an HD 5 or higher, but am sufficiently covered as it is. Remember when we ran 40-50 miles offshore based on compass bearing alone-now that was always somewhat interesting!!! I remember almost buying a Loran, but compass heading worked pretty well and eventually the gps prices became somewhat reasonable-my first was a Garmin 102-no map, just a highway view-a dotted line in middle and a hardline on each side-sucker worked great offshore where no land was.
"Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. BEAUTIFY AMERICA, RUN OVER A LIBERAL, THEN BACK UP AND SEE IF HE'S DEAD.

I have the HDS-7 for the bigger screen. Way smarter than I am but you can just use the basics and still get very good maps, depths even running at speed down the bay. Square screen and the side scan is not much more as a plug-in

Kenny, that's the one I am getting installed at Evans. Thinking of going bigger before Bryan orders it......... I hear it is a good unit for the size....

Bought a Lowrance HDS5 Gen2 with LSS-1, $850 after rebate from Xtreme Navigation for the new boat.

The HDS-8 is nice with the extra quick step buttons on the bottom but it's a lot more $$$. I run the HDS-7.
