  • Heading to the state park

    Hi all,
I am coming from Arkansas to camp at the state park for a few days of fishing. I am kind of a newbie to the salt water thing and am hoping to catch at least one red fish. I have made at least one trip to the gulf coast for the past 4 years and have yet to catch a redfish. I was wondering if anybody had any tips that would hel a redneck from Arkansas out. I will be bringing a Kayak to fish the bay out of, and will also bve trying to do a little surf fishing. Will I need to bring waders, any specific baits that I will need? I have been bass fishing pretty much all my life and can hold my own there, but need a little guidance for the redfish. Anything would be appreciated

Well...you couldn't have picked a better time to look for reds. They are schooling up around the bays, especially near the mouths of marsh drains. Look for them there on an outgoing tide. As for baits, use live finger mullet or any soft plastic that has a little chartreuse in it. They'll eat it! With a kayak, just paddle along the grass and you'll find them. Plus, the flounder run will be starting soon! Bring waders since the water is getting chilly. Good luck!

I will be ariving on the afternoon of the 20th and leaving around 10 on the 24th. I am hoping that this big cold front is not going to mess me up too much. I am also bringing a cast net will it bee too hard to catch finger mullet?

Nope, should be easy to catch some mullet. Sounds like you're gonna surfish for bull reds and yak the bay. The bay side of the GISP is good fishing. Topwaters, bass assassins (purple and chartruese with 1/8th oz. leadheads), spoons, cut mullet in surf for bull reds-ya need your TX License!!! Good luck and be safe.

The wind should be cutting back tomorrow morning. Looks like you're in for a nice weekend.

If that cut mullet isn't working in the surf get a few live blue crab...break them up into halves or quarters depending on the size.

I'll be there on the 20th too. But its home. I hear my yard is a wreck. Wont 'hire' my s-i-l to take care of my yard again. I was hoping to just find a couple of hours to take out the boat. Maybe in a few days. Piss.

Just look for the white flags. They'll have live shrimp.

Uncle Bucks at 61st and I-45 feeder, Margies on 61st, Bayou Bait right at 61st exit on feeder on right, Sea Isle Bait Camp which is the closest bait camp to GISP and another is Rusty Hook just past Terramar.

Good advice from all. You should be able to catch some bull reds in the surf...and conditions look nice this weekend. Use half-cut blue crabs, pogies/shad, or mullet. I prefer to use small circle hooks, but anything should work.

Well I made it to the state park and wouldn't you know that they do not have any campmsites for the weekend so I am holed in a motel on 61st street. Went out this morning and caught zip all week will try again this afternoon.

That's the truth, Those skeeters are sabertoothed right now, Tomorrow will be 4 tides, so the water will be moving a little bit but more important the wind may lay down. Good Luck tomorrow !
