The fall run is finally here down by South Padre Island. Fishing has been OK in the bay, the reds schooling up good, but the surf is catching on fire, with large schools of minnows, mullet, and bar jacks of some kind. It's very hard to get the fish to bite, they are so full of bait, so I'm experimenting with the Coon Pop ... although I'm getting plenty of smalls on my favorite Mirrolure. Runt Florida Pompano?
Anyway, the red tide has eased off in these parts, no nasty aerosol although a few coughs and itchy throats now and again. A 6-foot Bull Shark of about 120 pounds came in off the lower beach the other day, caught right near the jetties and a bunch of surfers - freaked them out!
Offshore, the blackfin tuna are thick, with daily landings in the double digits while trolling in Tuna Alley out by the Canyon, or potlicking the shrimp boats. I missed the last good trip but they caught 26 large blackfin tuna in 5 hours.
Forgot to mention we got the Cownose Ray in the bay now, schools of thousands of the buggers in the lower Laguna Madre by the Causeway area. I managed to catch a few to freeze for shark bait.
Hop you folks "up north" are having a good fall run this year! Only a few weeks left, I think.
