Late sunday morning I'm soaking mullet with no takers off the beach. Strong north wind had the surf flat, but rough further out. People are out in kayaks, etc, and I see a hobie cat with 2 passengers cruise by. Didn't pay it much mind, though it did look a little backend-heavy.
North wind is pumping. A few minutes later, I'm watching a nice sportfisherman cruising from freeport towards galveston, she's hugging the coast about a mile out to stay in calmer water. So lucky for the cat! As it cruises past I see it abruptly stop and spin around. It idles up to the hobie cat, I knew something was up. Look again and I see the hobie has sponsons pointing straight up in the air. Obviously, it's sinking. Sportsfisherman tows them in a ways, but obviously can't get close and the cat isn't towing well. A buddy of mine just happened to be launching his 2 seadoos at the time. He heads out there, hooks up the cat and slowly pulls it to the beach. Other seadoo gets the 2 passengers, husband and wife. From what I heard, the husband knew he had a crack in the hull. But had repaired it with SILICONE! and thought they were good to go. Think he got an earful from the wife?
Kudos to the sportsfisherman.
