  • Curado spooling issue - please help

Ok, so found a really old curado that had been sitting in the garage - had a ton of sand in it and followed shimano's reel maintenance youtube videos - HIGHLY recommend them if you are learning to clean your reel!

I am having an odd spooling issue. When the reel has the spool OFF the little gold piece that catches the spool WILL turn. It ticks me off because I've got this reel working perfectly otherwise - all greased and oiled!

In photo 1) The spool WILL turn.
In photo 2) The spool WILL turn.
In photo 3) The spool WILL NOT turn when pushed all the way in like it's supposed to be. I feel like something isn't catching.
In photo 4) The gold piece WILL turn with the spool off the reel. So it's obviously working right.

Help please and thank you!!! I have the drag and spool knobs tightened all the way. Checked spool knob and my little black square plastic washer appears to be there! Gonna take it out and flip it to see if it catches.

PS - Just flipped the black square and circle washers on the spool control knob and didn't help! Going to take pictures of the inside as well to see if that gives any more info.

does the spool slide in easy? do all the bearings spin free? on the gold piece, take a q tip & take some of the cotton off til.it fits snug inside gold piece, clean real good, may take several q tips, polish it when done. I cut the q tips in half & put in drill.

You put the anti reverse bearing in backwards. It's that big silver piece that slides over the race sleeve on the right side shaft. Look at the schematic again.

If the anti reverse bearing is in backwards you should not be able to reel forward with the spool out correct?

another thing you can try is to take the gold piece out & put on spool, make sure the notches on the gold piece go into pin on spool, they can get burrs on them & pushes gold piece in & the main gear does not make contact.

                      I can't help other than..
                      http://fish.shimano.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/us/index/customer_service0/reel_maintenance_instructions.html

If this doesn't help, I am reading book right now that suggested to send it to Shimano in Calif. They will return it in about 2 weeks and only charge $15.00 or so. (book written in 2003, so it will be more by now)

I sent mine to the Reel Inn in Baytown this year, excellent job and mailed back in 2 days.

Still not working but I've figured out something that might help.

Dawg - that didn't help but I tried what you said and when the small gold gear + spool was taken out it DID turn the spool on it's own. That seems to not be the problem. Even when I put it in the curado casing I can turn the spool shaft with gear on and they all turn. It lead me to figure out kinda what the problem is below.

In picture 1) When big gold gear is snapped down flush - the spool won't turn but the long gold handle does. It seems to just not move the big gold gear which in turn obv. doesn't move the little gold cast control gear.

In picture 2) When a space is left the gears DO make contact and the spool turns! Great! But even if I leave it like this, when I snap the reel cover back on it just gets pushed back down and reverts back to picture 1.

In picture 3) This is a frontal view of picture 1. When I turn the big gold reel handle with the big gold gear flush down (pic 1) both of the small white plastic gears under the 1 big gold gear turn. It just doesn't turn the small gold spool gear.

PS - Yes, under the main big gold gear I do have the silver washer gear (the one w/notches) plus the circular black plastic washer on it.

And thanks a lot in advance for the advice and help!!!

It is hard to tell in the first pic, but in the second, the small gold gear is backwards, & looks right in the 3rd pic.
