Is there any website/program/tips that will help show me the bottom contour...

...of the spots I fish?

Basically, I'm wondering how to tell what the bottom is composed of and the contour of it. Never used a depth finder - I also have google earth. Would either of these assist me - especially in places where I can't wade out?

PS - Finding spots via Kayak so no boat here

The maps at Academy show the bottom structure of the areas. They are listed as S for sand, M for mud, etc...

I just figured with the technology out nowadays there is some type of satellite imagery that knows/can see the bottom contour. If this doesn't exist than going the academy map route!

you could get a cheap finder for the yak for around a $100 for a new one or look for a good used one, I think that is the best way to learn the bottom other than wading.

I use this long outdated way of finding out what the bottom is. Its call feet and walking. Call me crazy but when I use my feet to walk all over the area I like to fish, I somehow find out what the bottom is like and what I'm walking on. Be it grass, sand, mud, shell, a mix. It has seemed to work so far so I don't plan to stop.

All of these are good. I usually have a collapsing aluminum pole on my yak that can extend to 8.5 feet. I use that to feel the bottom when its deep.

Dang...you must be pretty tall then! Fishing a lot of places which is over my head to walk in so unless it's a winter super low tide like that guy suggested I don't think this will be possible, lol.

But yea, in the spots we can walk in at we already do ^^^.

I was specifically referring to the deeper spots obv.

Ha ha old school! My dad didn't think the internet was real for the first 2 or 3 years it came out.

He still refuses to use it - but accepts the fact that it's real...finally. Lol.

Recently bought a Humminbird 575 down imaging sonar, couldn't quite afford the side scan, so far I am quite pleased with it, much better than my depth finder at showing bottom contour.
