Funny you mention that. At a spot FP showed me we exclusively catch mullet and throw them on bottom with a weighted rig from our casts nets. It's the only live bait spot where we would fish - really big mullet too. We catch lots of reds and trout on them even on bottom.Originally posted by reeltime View PostI think the next time i go i'm gonna get some piggies and try them. What are ya'll thought's on that?
On to my point - for the longest time we were throwing the piggies with the spikes on the back, back into the water bc we thought they were too big. Finger mullet was tough to obtain one day so we threw all piggies. Instant red action as soon as it hit the water.
Our best day yet has been off piggies fished on bottom! Had like 6 reds all over 20" and a few nice specs both over 20" as well all within about 1-2 hours worth of work. It's our spot when we want to fish the evening time and don't want to drive more than 15 minutes (kemah).I set my hook like I am fishing for tuna even if I am fishing for trout. Call me tuna Joe!

I used to fish with this ole salt down rockport way that would allways bring some fresh dead smellly shrimp and tip it on his live mullet in bay and he would outfish most.I LIVE IN A SMALL

Yeah, smell.Originally posted by reeltime View PostI used to fish with this ole salt down rockport way that would allways bring some fresh dead smellly shrimp and tip it on his live mullet in bay and he would outfish most.
Off topic does anyone know the difference between how trout feed as opposed to redfish/flounder? Nvm I'm gonna make a thread to see if anyone knows. I know specks are primarily surface feeders/sound.I set my hook like I am fishing for tuna even if I am fishing for trout. Call me tuna Joe!

My thinking may be jaded but the last four trips all the bait i saw in the water was mullet with a few shrimp here and there.I didn't see one piggie.I did have a turtle scare the sheet out of me.I will take a shark over a turtle any day.You can scare the shark away but you are more likely to piss a turtle off .There ain't no shoving your rod butt in a turtle nose! When that turtle surface about three feet from the stringer i yank the stringer before he chomped on a easy meal.I LIVE IN A SMALL

When looking for a bait that will work when most else is not try the dead shrimp that is pink and stinkin to tip other bait with both arty and live or dead natural baits. Another thing bout piggies...if I could only have one bait offshore in the deep blue give me a hand sized live piggy. I will deploy that bait with the proper weight or not depending on where I see the fish I'm after in the water column on my Furuno. I will bust his azz!I was raised by an old Cowboy, therefore I am.

Tryin to get it started ain't ya. I knew someone would bring that up just to stir tha pot. While we're at it what about hardheads? Believe it or not they are an outstanding ling bait. Git em goin bean burner, I'll make me some popcorn when I finish this proposal.Originally posted by Gilbert View Postpiggies work.
