I'll tell you right here! Goin west from the San Luis pier you will see the house that is farthest out into the surf. FWI, there used to be like 50 yards of beach from that bulkhead south into the gulf then. Right there back in the 60s a bunch of old car bodies, engines and all were put there to stop beach erosion. They were laid out kinda in a line out to sea. As the beach started to erode again they were exposed. There wasn't much left of them then except the more substantial pieces. When wading in that area it was wise to gingerly move out or you would suddenly fall into the washouts around these old cars and skin yosef up pretty bad. On those rare days when the water would be pretty clear you could see them esp with a mask and snorkle. Great memories and very good times. Enjoy your youth and fish hard! You can sleep when you're dead.

Back in the 80s and 90s when I was a surf shark we did a lot of that kind of fishin mostly west of San Luis Pass from the pier to the blown down condos (mostly at the area called the junkyard). We would free line finger mullet and piggies and used to catch lots of "gator trout". My friends and I would release all the big girls over 28". In those days I could run on almost no sleep and we would fish with our long rods till round 2 am then catch a few winks and hit the surf wading at dawn till the bite turned off. I miss those days and with the price of fishin offshore I may just take it up again! BTW, we didn't catch a lot of the 28's then in the surf, didn't seem to get real big out there but the fish caught in the surf seemed wilder and fought harder than the bay trout.

Yes they will and so will several other fish that will rip the rod right out of your hand. How do i know this because it happened Sunday.I was glad i had the rod float on.I use a egg weight 3/4 to 1 once then swivel
attached to 20 0r 40lb leader with kahle hook.

If I am wading the surf, I use a cork to chunk it. If I am on the rock groins, I free line them and/ or use a cork. When the water gets warmer, and i'm not gone, I use a carolina rig and throw it out.

Yep! They will. It's a lot easier when you see mullet around too.
