One that sticks out happened when I was prolly 10. This particular trip we had the air boat. We had fished in the morning and were going to go gigging at night. The two old men (after too many drinks) were too wore out to take us eager boys out in the air boat to go gigging. So the other kid and I grabbed the lanterns and the boat gigs and decided to take ourselves giggin. The ol man said "I will clean everyfish ya'll gig" in tone that made us think he knew we would not bring any flounder back. We walked in somewhere between the break water and the little jetties at POC. By the time we got there we were whopped down from caring those 10' long SS pipe gigs. We jumped in and comenced to whooping the flounder. We were dog tired when we finally came dragging back in with a couple stringers full of flounder and those dern gigs, but it was all worth it in the morning when our dads had to clean our fish for once.

One good memory was fishing all night in Chocolate as a tagalong kid, seeing the phosphorescents in the propwash for the 1st time, Adults brought a coffee pot, but no cups so they had to wash out the babyfood jars with hooks and weights in them to drink some coffee, breaking into a fishing shack and getting 40w motor oil to use as 2 cycle oil (I don't remember why we had to do that, but I remember we went back the next weekend to fix what we broke, and return what we stole and everything was repaired already. My Dad and my 2nd Dad ,neighbor, was laughing about having to break in again, just to return and repair the damage they caused last week)
This was the early '70s and I don't remember the break-down where we needed gas or 2-cycle oil, but I remember 2 30yr old men and a boy breaking into a fishing shack on stilts to get a qt of oil. Those same 2 men made sure to take the boy back the next week to show him, that WE NEED to return the oil that we "borrowed". One great teaching/learning experience for everyone involved and a great excuse to Mommy and Wives to Have to go to the water one more time...

As kids we would go to Boca Chica,S.Padre Island and fish the resacas and canals around Los Fresnos. My grandfather would take us to to the saltwater and we rode our mini bikes to the canals and resacas.Had and uncle the lived in Raymondville so laguna madre ,rivera(sp)beach in kingsville was the go to place for night fishing.we would gig the flats at low tide on south padre.I used to go down there once a year as i got older and fish most of the same places.I gotta say, there are alot of good memories in the valley.hunted Duval county with an uncle for several years.he knew alot of the ranchers around Freer so our hunts were free back in the day.Thinking back that far i am feeling my ageBeer, its not just for breakfast

having the craps table loaded up w/ a big pass line bet w/ odds, come bets and placed bets that have been pressed and all the hard ways played. The cocktail waitress has been bringing you so much beer that you have 3 or 4 stacked in front of you.
You have a massive, 4 finger dip of copenhagen and then the shooter rolls for about 55 minutes and afterwards; you leave with a good looking local girl and watch Vince Young trot into the corner of the endzone with 19 seconds left in the game against USC as Texas wins the BCS National Championship and everybodys happy.

Very old memories of trolling in Washington state for rainbow trout with my late grandfather and dad. My grandpa would sneak lures into my tackle box and insist that he didn't know where they came from.
Also fishing with my dad a few years back in the marsh here. We were catching reds and flounder and we both blatantly ignored the time we told the ladies we would be back, LOL.
Taking new people fishing and gigging and getting them their firsts.
Funny... Lots of hammer days and cool things seen, but the memories that stick are family-related or involve introducing new people to the sport.
