  • Question about bird island after Ike...

I am thinking hard about making the first flounder gigging trip of this year to my favorite place, B.I. tis friday night before it gets wendy this weekend.

Has anyone scouted this area yet, specificaly the flats between Mud Cut and Bird Island. Is the familiar channel still there and are all the flats still well defined as I might remember them.

I am going to guess the channel running along mud cut to the mouth of cold pass is still there but the flats have been cut up wich just may be a real good thing.

    Thanks in advance.

I didn't know them before the storm, but I have heard from others that they have not changed that much, if at all. If'n you're in the area, stop by the camp. We'll have the lights on Fri and Sat nights.

Where is the camp? I've read a lot of post that mention the rebuild but don't know where it is.

I may need an extra hand if I go Friday night so if my son or workmates can't go...anyone here interested? I would be launching at the Brazoria county park @ SLP around 10p. If anyone knows what its like to use a long gig to keep a fan boat attitude correct as it cruises a shore line or drop off would be a bonus.

        Here's an aerial photo

Here's an aerial photo. Only camp on the Mud Island side. I'm guessing you could probably just stop at our place and pick one of us up if you don't get any takers. We'll draw straws to see who goes. I've never gigged from a boat, and I'm guessing 007 hasn't either, so neither of us probably measure up to the needed skill-set, but it doesn't sound too hard to learn. - Sandy

Wow...thats a cool locale. I thought that was Church Hill Bayou and Mud Cut was the next channel up-the short one that feeds into east side of Bastrop Bay. All the same. I guess I'll make the trip even if its by myself-it should be an adventure. Got your number.

As I head up north through the channel, will your place be on the left or right...Is it the only camp left after the storm or what?

Ok...I see where you are from the fist picture. That should be easy enough to find.
Are there any large debis/nav hazards I should be aware of as I head north through the channel?

There's a bar at the mouth of Titlum-Tatlum. You'll want to round it to the north. The first part of the Bayou has the channel on the right hand side. When you get to the first camp on the left, the channel switches to the left. You'll see a PVC pipe, think of it as a "Change Lane to the Left" sign. As you get past the last camp on the left, there is a hairpin turn to the right. Take the turn wide, but not all the way to the left bank. Once out of the turn, the channel is down the middle to our dock. We are the only one on the right, last camp on the bayou. With an air motor, you could easily navigate the "trident" mouth of Titlum to get to Mud Cut.

If it was daylight, I'd show you the way. But Mike doesn't have running lights on his boat. Give a call if you get confused. There are still plenty of camps on the bayou, though 3 were wiped away by the storm and another is a complete loss.

Hope to see you out and about. - Sandy

I'm a little nervous because its going to be night and heading up a unfamiliar channel but I am 99% sure I'll be there.
I can take up to 3 extra adults but that means there will always be 2 waiting in rotation to poke the next flounder. It would be great if you can show me some super skinny water with hard sand to simi hard bottoms next to drop offs and along channels of the trident area. If you've never been in a fan boat burning a hole in the night you'll be in for a treat. I don't know why but I got a feeling the North shoreline of Bastrop would be good too but I have heard it can be a treacherous crossing if you don't know what you are doing...I imagine I will learn it sometime this summer.

Titlum is easy. Bastrop at night could be treacheerous indeed. Lots of reefs. Give us a call.
