  • Galveston ship channel - hopper dredge project

    Generally, the Galveston channel is to be dredged from the Pelican Isle bridge, along the Galveston channel, all the way out between the jetties to about 6 miles past the end of the jetties. There are gaps shown.

    The link below is to the plans.
    They show the project limits and the spoils placement area.
    The spoils placement is about 5 miles offshore
    The project is being bid now, with bids due June 21.

      No pipes. This is advertised as a hopper dredge project.

        They've been dredging in there for the last 2 or 3 years. I've picked up a few new spots watching drop-offs on the depth finder that have been pretty productive.

          Ah, so hopper means they dump it on a barge and move it offshore?

            Yup, because the traffic volume through the channel isn't supposed to be impeded. So, either they use a combo suction dredge and container vessel, or a dredge vessel feeding a barge. And the spoil is moved offshore for dumping.
