Agreed!! I understand unemploment compensation although they should diminish to encourage employment. Its not like those people didnt previously pay away half of their money to taxes. Wellfare is a joke i know a social worker, shemsaid people spend their life milking the system and finding loopholes to get more free money. They teach their children too.

I would love to see these people either become productive or starve.

Y'all, this is a result of what Kennedy and Johnson called, "The Great Society". It really began with the socialistic tendencies of F.D.R., but we can thank Kennedy-Johnson for what welfare is in its present state. I grew up in a city that is INFESTED with 3rd, 4th, and even fifth generation leeches. Yes, the same people that blamed the government and Bush for hurricane Katrina. What part of MANDATORY EVACUATION is difficult to understand? We need an end to this entitlement society. Nobody owes you anything for being born. You need to get off your butt and earn it. I'm not for ending all welfare. There is a place for it, but it's supposed to be a crutch for temporary use, not a wheelchair to ride in your whole life. I've seen horrible abuses of the Lone Star cards. I feel that you should only be able to purchase staples with them. No filet mignon. Nothing is free like these people think it is. Someone is paying, and it's you and me. Unemployment benefits are not wellfare. They are something we pay for out of every paycheck. I don't have a problem with someone getting laid off and using them. I was unemployed for 6 months once and I came darn close to applying. If I had a family, I would have done so very quickly. I had a college degree and 6 years of teaching/coaching and I couldn't get hired by McDonalds, Winn-Dixie, Toys R Us, Home Depot, or even Wal Mart. Every one of them gave me the same song and dance, "You're overqualified". So I know how it can be if you're out of work.

One of the main problems with welfare is that it rewards laziness. You get paid more to sit on your butt than a minimum wage job pays. I am 100% for drug testing these folks. But it's going to cost money too. Hopefully it will save more than it expends.

I have no problem with someone using it when needed especially with a family involved, as long as they are pursuing another job, but to use it as a means of living for as long as you can milk it and while on drugs? not okay with it

One of the other problems is the economics of a minimum wage is just not there. People think it helps people at the bottom.... No it doesnt, what it does is increases turnover rates and business expense while driving inflation and unemployment. Everyone would have their place without a minimum wage. Obviously some people are out of place. There really is no going back without a reveloution or collapse or something big. Can you imagine the uproar if a politician actually cut wellfare? In order to vote you should have to turn a profit and actually pay more taxes than handouts recieved since the last election cycle.

To me, the drug test for welfare recipients assumed that we're dealing with Negro crack heads here, which is not accurate because white women with kids are one of the larger segments of entitlement money, too. True, some are drinkers and pot smokers, and drinking is legal and pot should be legalized.

I keep thinking, a single mom with maybe some troubles and several kids, needs help, and we'll bust mom for coming up positive for some marijuana and stop all the checks. Well that's not so good for the kids, is it? How many of y'all have ever drank a 12-pack or "inhaled"?

But I agree with Coach too. I just wish people could be screened better but I don't think a drug test is the way to do it. Texas Legislature didn't do it this session so it's off for two more years before it can be considered.

I'll say one more thing and shut up. Our Legislature made a serious mistake by cutting Planed Parenthood and related reproductive services. Watch for another baby boom in the welfare class and the problem with more babies and more kids will get even worse. The kids didn't ask to get born, yet they get hurt the worst. If I were a smart man, I'd push for a voluntary option for such women in trouble to have their tubes tied so they won't make any more babies. We're going the wrong way, folks!

Im sorry Swells but Planned parenthood should either get by without tax dollars or cease to exist just like any other private company.

I could care less if someone gets an abortion, can you imagine what that kid would be if the same screwed up parents were forced to keep the kid? Everyone will have to answer to god.

Liberals would tell me im "anti stem cell research" too but im not. I just don't think the government should fund a private sector venture. They have no reason to be in the abortion or the stem cell business. You say that this will lead to more welfare babies... well i have a simple solution to that problem. Cut wellfare.... A LOT!!!

Id rather them take welfare away. This could wipe out 2/3 of them though so its a start.

I saw someone with a lonestar card literally buy 150 dollars of steaks at HEB and he followed me to my car and asked if I wanted to buy them for half off.
