For a spinning rig I would focus on the rod. It's not like anything spins when you cast like a casting real. Yes it's nice to have light equipment that is solid with infinite anti reverse, but there is a lot of brands that can perform that without that kinda money. Check out the US reels spinners, all I have heard is really good things about there spinners. Then put it on a sick rod and you'll be way in the black ...you might even sing AC/DC.

I am quite pleased with my 7'6" Shimano Terramar with a matched Spheros on it, a combo. I used to have Stradics but after two got to sounding like coffee grinders, I found the Spheros much smoother. Others have never had this problem and love the Stradic (I think Shimano has QC issues). I have caught everything from a 4-inch Florida pompano to a 40 pound AJ on it. A little pricey but some are discounted if you look around.

There really isn't a good spinning reel worth more than about 150 or 200 bucks, IMHO. If you want good drags like for offshore fishing, I'd go conventional and use a fighting belt or harness. That's just me - and my back - talking here.

I assume you guys have checked out ebay. I have more tackle then I'll probably ever use, mostly Penn SSG's, and Penn cheapies, along with a couple of Spheros', Fin Nor, & Quantum. All bought on ebay. With patients and timing I've bought this stuff at 50% to 70% the retail price for the new stuff. Some of the used reels are cheaper in great condition and if it's headed for the salt & sand of the surf then these are great tools. I'm skittish about using my better reels in the surf, like they're some kind of prom queens or something. None the less I plan on being in the surf tomorrow morning. Good luck to y'all.
Fish or work...Hmmm what should I do?
