  • Gulf Flounder Sighting

    Saw this little guy while gigging a week ago. He was stuck on top of grass at low tide with is back out of the water, waiting for a night heron to ruin his evening.

    Never seen this species of flounder before, so I had to look up some info. It is an adult gulf flounder, not the same as our southern flounder.

    o f outer arch 9-12 ( u s u a l l y 10-11);
    anal rays 53-63 ( u s u a l l y 56-61);
    dorsal rays 71-85 ( u s u a l l y 75-81);
    scales i n s t r a i g h t p o r t i o n o f 1 a t e r a l

    r e l a t i v e l y small : a t t a i n s a maximum
    standard l e n g t h (SL) o f about 420 mm
    Didn't copy well but it was taken from

    Southern flounder for size comparison, fish are ~16".

    The end result of targeting his bigger cousins.

      "Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. I like your reports Yan but then your subjects are always of interest to me as well.

                          I read some where that there are a few species of flounders in our coastal waters but most are only a few inches long and the one in this post grows up to be the largest of these "other" species attaining a length of just 10-12 inches.

                          Our Southern Flounders are the Halibuts of the 3rd coast.

                          Not that much different than a Karankawa indian hunting the shallows at night with a torch and a spear.
