  • SPOT Emergency/Satellite Messenger

I'm thinking about getting one of these to use when I'm out fishing, camping, hiking, etc. A lot of times, I don't have cell service. I mainly want it for the emergency broadcast message it sends to the proper authorities with your GPS position. Does anyone have one and if so how do you like it?

I have a buddy that has one he takes offshore with him. He's never used it but it's nice to know it's there if you need it.

Sounds like a good idea.....especially for older guys like me who often fish alone and do less than reasonable things .

They had the little orange units in the bargin cave at cabelas in Buda, outside of Austin .... you still have to subscribe to the service but you might save a little $$$ .... you can call them and they can ship it to you

Thanks guys. Went to Bass Pro today and talked to the guy in the electronics section after reading up on it online. The service for a whole year is about the same price as the device, but they recently made it so that you can buy the service just for your trips. I figured the times when I would most need it (hiking, camping, fishing new spot or alone) I would just pay for it then. It's real nice though. Your family can track you online and you can send them messages where you don't get a lot of cell service. The emergency beacon is also better covered than most other Personal Locator Beacos. It's also small and light.

I have seriously thought about these, but the only time I go offshore now is on a long range tuna boat and they dont like it when you bring devices like these aboard .... so I opted to not do it..

And the service plans when I looked it up were a little on the high side
