  • Blockade Runners: Memorial Day Weekend 2011

I've been putting invites on the social group only for a while now, but it hasn't exactly worked as I thought it would. I reckoned I'd reward those who worked on the place, keep invites to them only, and that they would get on there regularly and see what's up, but it's been mostly me talking to myself. I love being out there by myself, but everything's better when it's shared. Since none of the partners or social group members look like they're coming out or bringing anyone this weekend, I thought I'd throw an invite out here on the main board.

I'll be headed down Friday evening and will stay 'til Monday or until I ain't having fun anymore. Curmudgeon is coming out on Saturday for the day only. If anyone wants to come out Saturday evening and spend the night, or Sunday and spend the night, let me know. The wind is supposed to continue to pump, so I won't pretend fishin' will be great.

I know we have a lot of new people here who may not know about the place, so here are the details. It's a fishin' camp near SLP, accessable by boat only. No running water, no electricity, a little bit rustic. I do have a generator, but I don't generally run it unless I have guests. If you'd like to use the lights to fish and want A/C while you sleep, please bring gas or be ready to help out with the expense of the gas I'll use. Bring your own food/beverages, behave yourself (don't get sloppy drunk or act like a butt-head, there's no place for folks like that there), and be ready to help clean up before you leave. The fishing is good right off the dock, with good wading up and down the bayou. I also have a kayak there for anyone to use. If there's work to do, I'll ask you to throw in, but there's little left to do these days. I might take 10 minutes of your time, if that much.

If you have a boat, I can escort you and show you the channel. If you don't have a boat, I can pick you up at the ramp at the SLP County Park (Old KOA). The place can sleep 12 in a pinch, but I find that 3-4 people is best. Kids are welcome, as are wives and girlfriends. We've recently gotten the "Girl Approved" endorsement from the daughter of one of the partners.

I won't make it a habit to post open invites to everyone on the main board. I'll keep using the social group for that. You gain access to the social group by coming out and showing that you're the kind of person the partners and I would like to have around out there. This weekend is pretty wide open if you want to come out. Just send me a PM. - Sandy

I'm really looking forward to getting out there. Even if it's blowing, at least the weather and company will be good!

I heard you on your thread Deano. Fixin' to reply over there presently.

Just so everyone knows, Firewalker (AKA Funk Shoal Brutha) is liquor banned on the bayou. Beer only.

Beautiful night out here, but in the words of TXSHOCKWAVE, it's blowing eleventy BILLION miles an hour again.

Had a buddy bearing blow out on me on the way down tonight, but the bearing was only warm. TRP 150 will be fixing me up with a new one when he comes down.

Expecting Curmudgeon for fishin' tomorrow. I just hope this wind calms down some. Oddly low tide this evening, given the present wind. Just about so set out some crab traps and call it a night.

Well, since I noticed when Coachlaw posted this, I decided to take my time and not head out too early. The wind is really having at it!

So Coach picked me up a at the dock around 10 and we headed to the Blockade Runners. The wind was blowing pretty good, but it was a gorgeous day to be out. We stopped off and unloaded some gear and commenced to chat and get to know each other on the porch. After a while we thought it might be prudent to wet a line or two, so we worked our way up the bayou a bit and CoachLaw put me in charge of the stake out stick (I'll let him tell you how well that worked out).
We were flinging dead shrimp and I was losing more on the cast than I was in the water! They just weren't biting so we decided to head back for some lunch. Sandy made a pot of green beans & potatoes with sausage, pork, bacon and I don't know what all else. It was great. It was was soo good I'd have been happy just to drink the broth (but I didn't!).
We checked the crab traps and they were full of hermit crabs.
After a while TRP150 came out with his kids and we all had a great porch sit. All in all, a great (first?) visit to the blockade runners! I really enjoyed myself and met some good folks.
