  • Engine help!!

2008 VMax 150 carbed. motor ran fine until a month ago-started getting hard to start and rough idle, so replaced plugs, started better but idles rough even after warmed up. When I push down on key choke while putting down canal, rpm jumps up and motor sounds and runs great for about 1 minute then goes back to rough, then push key choke again and then runs fine for a minute, then back to same sheeet.

Before I tear down the carb covers and spray the heck outta it with carb cleaner (which means trailer it and unscrew all covers to get at carbs), I wanna know if it's possibly an electrical choke or probably (hope) just a sticking choke which will be good when cleaned real well with carb cleaner spray. Motor runs fine at WOT or anywhere in between. Plugs are gapped correctly (0.40). It aint the gas either.

TXShockwave and anyone else-your thoughts are most appreciated.

Typo Hogie-thanks for pointing that out. Clark: I don't doubt your dyeing skills-I saw your hands last sturday-all orangish and ya all said it was from the bugs-yeah sure. I'm

just sorry we dint market it first-I planned to get Jerry & Becky ready to go with special dye kits "Fer Sale" right next to her plants and was gonna hit Steve up at Sea Isle-shoot, we'd make a killing-JT was gonna back the venture and we'd go coastwide-but noooo, you let the proverbial cat outta the bag and done spoilt it. JT is PO'd and said he's gonna have the Sand Bar charge double for anyone with coloring on their hands now to make up for the lost venture revenue-you and Travis will have to drink somewhere's else or like the sign says in the bathroom-"Wash Hands Before Returning to Work".

          Jerry,

The VMAX will need to be gone through by a certified mechanic. Tons of things will get cloged up through-out that motor and it's just the price of owning one.

Stone and Sons did it to two of my family members VMAX. I could not understand why he has to do that, and he explained that they are great motors but do require a deep cleaning of carbs and injectors by someone who sees it on a daily basis.

Ethonal and age are the two main factors.

Thanks Bryan. I'll try the spraying down first and see if that works-if not, I'll have to take it in or get someone out.

When you say idles rough, are you saying low idle or like an engine miss? At wide open throttle, are you running the same rpm's as before the problem?

Yes it is not missing, just rough low idle and when I bump the choke it's fine so I figure it's a choke issue. Runs fine except at idle-low speed jet or sticky choke arey thoughts.

If the rpm's go up when you push the choke switch, then the choke should be working, when you push the choke the choke plate closes more causing it to draw more fuel out the carbs due to increased vacuum. So more than likely your problem is dirty carbs.

Go get you some sea foam and add it to your gas. next drain the carbs should be a brass screw on the bottom of the carb bowl. then go run that sucker. If the build up is not bad the sea foam sitting in the carbs will clean them.
