I posted about this problem of guns from the US ending up so easy in Mexico several months ago - forget which forum it was - and their reaction was "Sammie you dipshatz, send all the guns ya want to Mexico and let 'em shoot each others heads off for all I care."

Now it is very different. The CBP is now checking for guns and money headed in the south lanes at the border. True, the ATF didn't get the memo and, well, I don't have any sympathy for 'em. How high in the ranks this goes I have no idea, other than the Phoenix District ATF managers are probably going to get fried at the very least.

I ain't arguing about all that, other than the "redneck opinion" seems to have swung 180 degrees. Now we have .223 and .308 long bullets coming across the dang border, mostly supplied by ... Wal-Mart, the small gun dealers, the gun shows in San Antone and Houston, and stuff like that. The guns and ammo that killed a CBP officer (huge news down here, a Brownsville boy), was traced to a store and two American dudes up by Dallas. Just seems like the opinion changed in a heartbeat.

I'm not so sure on tracing bullets and guns back to a starting point. Yes, it can be done for good reasoning and sometimes to sway public opinion. Fact is, it would have happened with or without these particular guns. But when you have a gun store owner trying to do the right thing, and a Federal officer telling him to do THE WRONG thing, then you screw up and lose track of the bad guys and LIE ABOUT WHO IS RESPONSIBLE. The Feds here are trying to make the case that most of the guns the Mexicans are using are coming from the USA. This is ridiculous. Most of them are coming from Federale arsenals, especially ALL of the full auto weapons.
