West Bay Crabber!

Forgot to mention, i was poking around West last week and saw the grade A jackass running and gunning the south shore coves again. I was hoping he retired, won the lottery, or whatever else to keep his ignorant self off the water. Be on the lookout fellas, and if you gotta fish in a cove in the AM, you better make it early before the inbred crabber ruins it for you. White boat, console towards the front, etec engine, running like hell and inconsiderate like you've never seen. Even the late spring/summer boat operators(AKA buzzards) have nothing on this guy.

He is a thorn in my side.

This guy is very persitant in the SS Coves. It is very frustrating when you are wading these areas.

Last year when he placed his traps in the prime wading areas, he was getting to close to wade fisherman. There were some heated arguments. I wanted to know the law, so I called TP&W. There is a directive that is called "Harassment to Fisherman and/or Boater"......something to that nature. In other words if you are in place whether wading or anchored and a boater comes in to your space in an unsafe or distribing fashion, then that person can be reported. Anyhow, I called the Game Warden, and explained what this crabber was doing. I suggested that he pull his traps at a different time than first light on a Sat. morning, as many, many wadefisherman are in these prime coves at that time. They said they would look out for him. I have never spoke with him, but may have a friendly conversation with him.

I had a friendly conversation with him last summer.

Said something to the effect that he had been doing this for 30something years...so obviously that gives him the right to do whatever he wants.

I gracefully gave him a peace of my mind, got his TX numbers, called the man, and went about it. I'm sure i'll get to see my old friend once again this year. Looking forward to it...not.

Kenny, I understand what you're saying, however this gentleman crabs in the Dalhite/Dana's Coves primarly. Not sure if you fish these coves much on the weekends. I am sure he is a nice guy and trying to make a living. From your comment it sounds like he is entitled more so than a fisherman or recreational boaters. Let me be clear, I don't mind him crabbing at all, in fact he has placed them in better areas this year. Whether he is slow in or out of the coves, he needs to respect fisherman....it is public waters. Just a friendly debate.

He crabs in all the coves and all over the bay. He may respect fishermen but he's still going to rebait and check his traps. It's kind of like the air boat guy. He makes money taking tourist on trips in the marsh and bay. It's loud and I may not like it, but he has the right to do it.

What this crabber needs to do is catch Kenny in a prime top water bite and slow in and slow out on Kenny’s reef... That will be the test to see if ole' doc got Kenny's meds right... Speaking of birds...i had to send some up the other day.

Yes...this guy is really considerate of fisherman. Here's an example of his consideration.

Late spring last year, clark08 and myself were on a good topwater bite in the far back of one of the coves in West and i was actually standing right next to one of Crab Catcher's traps. I was catching a few fish right there so i didn't move and in roles Crab Catcher. I think to myself...he'll just go on, check his other traps, leave, and come back for this one at a later time. WRONG. Homeboy rolls up behind me, doesn't say a word to me while approaching, and cleans out/rebaits the trap that is less than 5 yards from me. We had already had one of out pleasant coversations earlier in the spring, so i just look at him, shake my head, throw a bird up, and start the walk back to the boat.

I hope they close the crab season on the Texas coast.
