What a treasure it was having my dad out with me for almost a week. My Spring Break began quietly with just me and VJER heading out last Friday to get everything ready for the concert/crawfish boil. VJER installed the repaired and enhanced screen door. Tres showed about 2:30 in the morning and we passed a good time until about 4am when everyone crashed.
Saturday dawned with much promise as our numbers grew, Ibtsoom and Rachael brought Reeltime out with them and VJER's daughter, Sarah, Primer and Redstikr showed just before them. I went to wash the crawfish pot to get the bugs going and DOH! A hole in the bottom of my crawfish pot! So I found all the medium sized pots I had and had the big burner and stove going hot. I don't know how, but we got everything cooked and it was good. Not my best boil, but the first I had done in a long time. We feasted until Ibtsoom and Tres got their fingers dry enough for pickin' strings.
Whoooweeee! Talk about a show. As the show went on, everyone from down the bayou started showing up. 6 or 7 boats, and VJER counted 30 folks on the front porch. People started filing out as the show wound down around 1am. I was sad to see it end, but what a time.
Everyone filed out on Sunday after a big breakfast and then it was just Tres and me for a while and we actually fished waiting for his daughter, Courtney to arrive. She got there around 6:30 and we passed a good time. They had to leave the next morning and I stayed around for a while to clean up what was left from the party. I got back to Angleton Monday afternoon just before the big rain hit. Perfect timeing and I needed a rest.
So I snoozed for a little while until it was time to pick my pappa up at Hobby. I got him back to Angleton and we both crashed. Tuesday morning I hit the Kroger and we made it to the camp around 2:30. Tres and Courtney made it back for the evening just as Booyah Red and his wife, Maria showed up for a visit from their place on Mud Cut. I warmed up some of VJER's gumbo and we all passed a good time and Tres played a song for Booyah and crew before they had to leave. Later that night, Tres and Court had to leave, but they left something behind. They left Mike Dance (Yes, he's related to Bill) and he made some blackened redfish for supper that went perfectly with the gumbo.
Mike Dance is straight out of the blooper reels of his cousin, but he's a really nice guy. I invited him to join us here on FWE. He's working on doing a fishing show himself and he shot a lot of video while at the camp. When it was time for him to go on Wednesday, Primer showed back up for some front porch sittin'. I did some great steaks Dad had purchased and we passed a good time listening to Sinatra and oldies from the 50's. Dad really enjoyed that. Thanks again Coe for the great cooler radio. My dad really enjoyed being able to hear his music.
On Thursday, Primer left us again and Dad and I boated over to Mud Cut for a nice supper. Booyah Red and his wife Maria had a feast of snow crab legs and fresh salmon. We told old stories of Bayou Cook and heard Booyah's tales of growing up fishing here. He even set up a campfire where we sat and enjoyed the beautiful evening. Thanks again Mike and Maria for the hospitality, vittles, and good music. Again Dad was able to enjoy his kind of music thanks to Mike's sattelite radio. Thanks Mike! We left as Dad began to fade and had a couple of bumps with the edges of the channel coming back, but we made it.
Friday afternoon, TMO, Greg, Frank, and Frank's son Alex showed in the afternoon with much needed ice, brew, and gas. Tom brought some awesome steaks, and I made a shrimp sauce to top them. Love that surf and turf! Threw in some yellow squash and the best asparagus I've ever made. No fish of any consequence were caught, but I think we caught our limit of buzz. Alex is in the Corps of Cadets at A&M and plays the bag pipes. He regaled us with Dixie in honor of our location, The Flower of Scotland, and of course, Amazing Grace. A talented youngster for sure!
Saturday morning Tom and I teamed up for breakfast and it turned out great, though not as planned. Sometimes I make my best mistakes in front of a stove. Alex figured out how to hook up his Iphone to Coe's ice chest boom box and Dad had Sinatra to listen to again. VJER showed up for a short visit before he headed to the cookoff and I got to pilot Tom and Greg's new toy, a beautiful 23 foot Majek. What a boat! Thanks again Tom for doing the dishes. Everyone eventually hit the road, leaving just me and Dad. I cooked up a drum on the halfshell with trout debris as a topping and we watched Star Wars together. I crashed just about the time Obi Wan said, "These aren't the droids you're looking for." Dad watched the whole movie though.
I awoke at 4:30 am really upset with myself that I didn't stay up to watch it with him. I got to work picking up a week's worth of leave behinds and cleaning up. Dad rousted at 8:30 and started helping me. We left the camp around 10:15. I hated to leave so very much, because it was almost the end of my time with Dad. When he arrived, he had been having some problems with his replaced hip and he didn't get to do much more than read and relax this trip. I really wanted to fish with him, but it was a big deal just to get him into and out of the boat. Hopefully he can get it fixed so we can have some fishin' time together in the future.
All in all, what a fantastic Spring Break. I've got 75 pictures and I'll be posting them as I can. Dad is safe at home now back in New Orleans, but he left some great memories here. Miss you already Papa.
